In a major counterintelligence breakthrough, authorities have arrested a civilian employee associated with the Indian Air Force (IAF) for allegedly leaking confidential defence information to Pakistani handlers. The arrest, made following months of investigation, has exposed what officials believe could be a wider Espionage network operating across India.
Investigation Uncovers Larger Spy Network
According to investigators, the case did not emerge overnight. The trail began months earlier with the detention of another suspect, which eventually led Rajasthan Intelligence agencies to uncover deeper links involving multiple individuals.
During interrogation, the initial suspect revealed connections to individuals who were in frequent contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives. This crucial lead helped authorities identify Sumit Kumar as a key figure in the espionage chain.
Accused Identified as Air Force Civilian Staff
The accused, Sumit Kumar, aged 36, hails from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. He was employed as a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) member at Air Force Station Chabua, located in the Dibrugarh district of Assam.
Investigators believe that Kumar used his position within the Air Force establishment to access sensitive information, which he then allegedly passed on to foreign handlers.

Joint Operation Leads to Arrest
The arrest was carried out through a coordinated effort between Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence units. Kumar was taken into custody from Chabua and transported to Jaipur for detailed questioning.
Officials revealed that the accused had been in contact with Pakistani intelligence agents since 2023. In return for financial incentives, he allegedly shared classified information related to India’s defence infrastructure.
Highly Sensitive Information Allegedly Leaked
During interrogation, Kumar is believed to have disclosed crucial details about multiple Indian Air Force installations. These include Air Force Station Chabua in Assam and Air Force Station Nal in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
The leaked data reportedly contained sensitive operational details such as locations of missile systems, deployment of fighter aircraft, and confidential information regarding personnel and commanding officers.
Authorities also found evidence suggesting that the accused facilitated the creation of Social Media accounts for Pakistani handlers using mobile numbers registered in his name, further aiding covert communication.
Case Registered Under Official Secrets Act
Following the investigation, a case was registered at the Special Police Station in Jaipur under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Kumar was formally arrested on March 22.
Officials believe that the case points toward a broader espionage network backed by Pakistani intelligence agencies. Further investigations are underway to identify additional suspects and uncover the full extent of the operation.
National Security Concerns Rise
This incident has once again highlighted vulnerabilities within critical defence establishments and the growing threat of espionage through digital and social media channels.
Security agencies are expected to tighten surveillance and strengthen internal protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future. As the investigation progresses, more revelations are likely to emerge regarding the network and its operations.
