Kashmir Under Restrictions, Lal Chowk Sealed; Schools Shut Amid Protests Over Ayatollah Khamenei’s Reported Death

Srinagar: Authorities in Kashmir have imposed precautionary restrictions across parts of the Valley following protests triggered by the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Security has been significantly tightened in sensitive zones, with the iconic Lal Chowk area in Srinagar sealed to prevent gatherings and demonstrations.

Officials confirmed that access to the historic Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) at Lal Chowk has been restricted, and security personnel have been deployed in large numbers to deter potential unrest.

Lal Chowk Sealed, Movement Closely Monitored

Lal Chowk, often regarded as the symbolic heart of Srinagar, witnessed heavy security deployment as authorities sealed entry points and placed barricades around the Ghanta Ghar. Police and Paramilitary Forces were seen patrolling key intersections to maintain Law and Order.

Officials stated that these measures are preventive in nature and aimed at ensuring that protests do not spiral into violence. Surveillance and monitoring have also been intensified in other sensitive areas of the city.

Schools and Colleges Closed Across Kashmir Valley

As part of precautionary measures, authorities ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley for two days. The move affects government and private schools, colleges, and other academic establishments.

The University of Kashmir has also postponed its ongoing examinations in light of the prevailing situation. Students have been advised to wait for revised schedules to be announced officially.

Authorities also confirmed that mobile internet services have been restricted across the Kashmir Valley. The decision was taken as a preventive step amid the circulation of protest visuals and viral content related to developments in Iran, which officials said had heightened tensions.

Law enforcement agencies indicated that monitoring of digital platforms has been stepped up to prevent the spread of misinformation and inflammatory material.

Omar Abdullah Calls for Peaceful Mourning

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged restraint and emphasized the importance of allowing people to express grief peacefully.

“We must ensure that people in Jammu and Kashmir who are mourning are allowed to do so peacefully. The Use of Force or needless restrictive measures should be avoided by the police and civil administration,” he stated earlier.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to residents abroad, Abdullah added, “The Government of Jammu & Kashmir remains in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs to safeguard the interests and well-being of our residents in Iran.”

Heightened Vigil Across Sensitive Areas

Security forces remain on high alert in several districts, particularly in areas historically prone to demonstrations. Authorities have stated that movement is being closely observed and additional deployments may be made if required.

The situation in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley remains tense but under control, officials said, adding that the restrictions are temporary and subject to review based on developments.
