A controversy has erupted after Monalisa Bhonsle, the young woman who became widely known during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, married Farman Khan in Kerala. Her father, Jayasingh Bhonsle, has now appealed to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to intervene and ensure that his daughter returns safely to the state.
Monalisa Bhonsle, aged 18, hails from Maheshwar town in Madhya Pradesh and belongs to the Pardhi community, a nomadic tribal group. She reportedly married Farman Khan on Wednesday at the Nainar Temple in Arumanoor, Poovar, Kerala. The ceremony was conducted according to Hindu customs and was reportedly attended by several local political leaders from the state.
After returning from Kerala, her father publicly claimed that his daughter had become a victim of what he described as “love jihad”, a controversial term used by certain groups to allege that Muslim men deliberately lure Hindu women into relationships or marriage with the aim of religious conversion.
Speaking to reporters, Jayasingh Bhonsle urged the Madhya Pradesh government to intervene and help bring his daughter back home.
“My daughter is known across the country. I request Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to ensure that Monalisa returns safely to Madhya Pradesh. She has been deceitfully trapped by a Muslim youth named Farman Khan. This is a clear case of love jihad,” he said while addressing the media.
He further claimed that he had been aware of his daughter’s ambitions to pursue a career in the Entertainment Industry but had no knowledge about her relationship or plans to marry.
According to him, Monalisa had previously informed her family that she was receiving training in acting and dance with hopes of entering the film industry.
“I was told that my daughter would be appearing in two films. She had said she was undergoing acting and dance training. People had promised to help her build a career in movies. I never imagined that something like this would happen,” he said.
Meanwhile, members of the Hindu Jagran Manch, including local leaders Sameer Mahule and Bhupendra Chauhan, stated that they would attempt to convince Monalisa to return to her family in Madhya Pradesh.
However, Monalisa Bhonsle has strongly rejected the allegations made by her father and others. Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, she said the marriage was her personal decision and denied claims that she had been forced or manipulated into the relationship.
The young woman, who became an internet sensation during the Kumbh Mela and was widely referred to as the “Kumbh Mela girl”, appeared before the media along with her husband Farman Khan and clarified that there had been no religious conversion involved.
She emphasized that the wedding was conducted according to Hindu traditions and that both partners respected each other’s beliefs.
“We were married according to Hindu customs. I was the one who insisted on the marriage. To be honest, he did not really want to marry initially. I practically forced him to marry me,” Monalisa told reporters.
The newly married couple also dismissed rumors circulating on Social Media regarding religious conversion. They clarified that neither of them had changed their religion after the marriage and that their relationship was based on mutual understanding rather than religious considerations.
Monalisa, who is the eldest among four siblings, also revealed that her family had wanted her to marry a relative from within the family. According to her, her parents had proposed that she marry her paternal aunt’s son, an arrangement she did not agree with.
She stated that disagreements over her marriage decision had led to tensions between her and her family members.
The couple eventually decided to marry in Kerala after approaching the Thampanoor Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram seeking protection. According to police officials, Monalisa had approached authorities requesting assistance because she feared opposition from her family.
Following the request, the police reportedly provided protection to the couple, enabling them to proceed with their wedding ceremony at the Nainar Temple.
The incident has since sparked debate on social media and in political circles, with discussions focusing on issues such as personal freedom, interfaith marriages, and the ongoing controversy surrounding allegations of “love jihad.”
While Monalisa maintains that her decision was voluntary, her father continues to insist that she was misled and has called on the Madhya Pradesh government to intervene in the matter.
As the controversy unfolds, authorities have not yet indicated whether any official action will be taken in response to the father’s appeal to the state government.
