A tragic boating accident in the Maldives has taken a serious turn, as two Indian Nationals — including a legendary rally driver and a decorated sailor — remain missing days after the incident. While industrialist Gautam Singhania has safely returned to India with minor injuries, search operations continue amid rising concern and uncertainty.

High-Speed Boat Capsizes Near Felidhoo Island

The accident occurred late Thursday night when a high-speed boat carrying seven passengers capsized near Felidhoo Island in the Vaavu Atoll of the Maldives. Reports indicate that the vessel overturned approximately two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo while traveling at high speed.

The group onboard included five Indian men, along with a Russian and a British national. According to authorities, the sudden capsizing threw five passengers into the sea, triggering an emergency rescue response.

Missing Individuals Identified

One of the missing persons is Hari Singh, a highly respected name in Indian motorsport. At 59, he is a five-time national rally champion and holds the distinction of being the first Indian to win the Asia Zone Rally Championship. His disappearance has deeply shaken the motorsport community.

The second missing individual is Commander Mahesh Ramachandran, an Arjuna Award-winning sailor and former naval aviator. Known for his leadership and contributions to Indian sailing, he was serving as the captain of Gautam Singhania’s luxury yacht, Ashena, at the time of the incident.

Gautam Singhania Safe and Recovering

Gautam Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, was also onboard during the accident. He was among those rescued and sustained only minor injuries. He has since returned to Mumbai, where he is receiving medical care.

A spokesperson confirmed that Singhania is stable and expressed gratitude for the support and well wishes received from across the country.

Injuries and Medical Response

All seven passengers suffered injuries of varying severity. Initial medical treatment was provided at a local hospital in the atoll before further arrangements were made.

Some injured individuals have been transported to India for advanced care, while others — including a Russian woman and an Indian man — continue to receive treatment in the Maldives.

Reports also indicate that one Indian national suffered severe injuries, including the loss of an arm, and has been evacuated to India for specialized medical attention.

Intensive Search Operations Continue

The MNDF’s Male Area Command Coast Guard Second Squadron initiated search operations around 12:40 AM following the accident. Since then, rescue teams have conducted extensive sweeps across thousands of square nautical miles.

Divers have been deployed for deep-water searches, while aerial and maritime units continue scanning the region. Despite these efforts, authorities have confirmed that the missing individuals have not yet been found.

“Search operations are ongoing, but the missing individuals remain untraced,” a police spokesperson stated.

Motorsport and Sailing Communities in Shock

The disappearance of Hari Singh has sent shockwaves through India’s motorsport fraternity. Known not only for his achievements but also for mentoring young talent through platforms like JK Tyre Motorsport, he is widely respected across the racing community.

Similarly, Commander Ramachandran’s absence has deeply impacted the sailing community, where he is recognized as a leader and pioneer with international achievements.

Hope Amid Uncertainty

As search operations enter a critical phase, both the sports and maritime communities remain hopeful for a breakthrough. Families, colleagues, and well-wishers continue to await updates, holding onto hope for the safe recovery of the missing individuals.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-speed marine travel and the importance of safety measures, even in controlled environments.
