By the end of 2025, OpenAI, which is well-known for its AI chatbot ChatGPT, plans to establish a corporate office in New Delhi, highlighting India as a significant growth area.
Sam Altman, a Silicon Valley millionaire who cofounded the business, said in a statement on Friday that it has begun hiring to grow its local staff. Pragya Misra, who oversees partnerships and public policy in India, is OpenAI’s sole employee there at the moment.
“With outstanding tech talent, a top-notch developer ecosystem, and robust government support through the India AI Mission, India has all the ingredients to become a global leader in AI,” Altman said in the statement. “We are committed to making advanced AI more accessible nationwide and to building AI for India, and with India, and opening our first office and assembling a local team is a crucial first step in that direction.”
With additional personnel on the ground and a larger footprint, OpenAI will be able to expand its collaborations with the government, companies, and developers in the 1.4 billion-person nation for its tech expertise.
Here is what we currently know about OpenAI’s goals in India.
1. The Push for India
Second only to its native nation of the United States, India is ChatGPT’s largest overseas market and one of the fastest-growing. The fact that the number of weekly active users has increased fourfold in only the last year serves as evidence of that. Furthermore, the greatest student population on ChatGPT globally is found in India.
The fact that India is one of the Top 5 OpenAI development marketplaces is also intriguing.
2. Designed in India
Due of this volume of traffic, OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Go, a subscription option available only in India that costs ₹399 per month and integrates UPI payments. Compared to the free version, users can send messages and create photos up to ten times more frequently.
For heavy users, there are two additional subscription categories that enable priority access, quicker turnaround, and larger usage limits: ChatGPT Pro (₹19,900/month) and ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999/month).
3. India’s AI
In collaboration with the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Altman has announced the launch of an AI literacy initiative called OpenAI Academy for India. This project is related to the fact that ChatGPT’s GPT-5 model now comprehends Indian languages much better.
OpenAI has introduced the Study Mode for students, the largest group of ChatGPT users in India, which provides individualized answers, interactive questions, and detailed instructions to promote learning and comprehension.
4. Constructed in India
In addition to opening an office in New Delhi, OpenAI intends to hold its first Developer Day and Education Summit in India later this year, both of which will take place in August. Students, developers, startups, and businesses creating AI for India will come together for that.
5. AI in India
The move by OpenAI to “establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption,” said Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In order to access the nation’s tech expertise and developer ecosystem, the government also said that it would be working with OpenAI on its India AI Mission.
MeitY announced a similar endeavor with Sarvam AI. Under the India AI Mission, the AI firm, which was started by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, is creating LLMs for Indian languages and application cases. Among its uses are chatbots, sentiment analysis, text summarization, content production, language translation, and educational resources that are specifically designed for Indian languages.
How OpenAI and Sarvam AI work together on this front is yet up in the air.
With Perplexity AI available for free with every Airtel connection, the race to take over India’s AI business is undoubtedly strategic in nature and extends beyond financial gain.
