Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah, the Indian Army has intensified its relief operations in Sri Lanka through Operation Sagar Bandhu. The mission involves providing critical medical services and accelerating the repair of damaged bridges, with coordinated support from the Sri Lankan Army and local civil authorities.
Bridge Reconstruction in Jaffna and Chilaw
The Indian Army’s Engineer Task Force (ETF) has initiated the recovery and deconstruction of the damaged Puliyampokkanai Bridge in Jaffna using a wheeled excavator. The first Bailey bridge is expected to open by Saturday afternoon, and full reconstruction is slated for completion by December 10.
Approximately 70% of the necessary construction stores have been relocated from the Road Development Authority (RDA) yard to assist in building a 120-foot dual highway in Jaffna, with the remaining supplies expected by Wednesday night. Pier work in Chilaw is scheduled to begin within the next 48 hours. A fourth set of Bailey bridges is being loaded in Pathankot and is expected to depart at 0900 hours on December 9. One full set has already reached the construction site.
Advanced Technology for Faster Operations
In line with the Indian Army’s modernization drive and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the ETF is using advanced indigenous technology such as domestic drones, SONAR-based laser range finders, and remotely operated combat cruiser UGVs for reconnaissance at both sites. This approach ensures faster operational timelines and efficient execution of engineering tasks.
Medical Assistance Across Affected Areas
The PARA Field Hospital continues to provide essential medical support, having treated 3,338 patients so far. On December 8 alone, the hospital conducted four surgeries, 73 minor procedures, and cared for 1,128 patients. The facility has received strong appreciation from local communities, and a visit from the Sri Lankan President is anticipated soon.

India’s “Neighbourhood First” Policy in Action
Through Operation Sagar Bandhu, the Indian Army has reinforced its commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy by delivering rapid engineering solutions, high-impact medical care, and leveraging state-of-the-art indigenous technology to support Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. The mission underscores India’s proactive humanitarian assistance and regional solidarity.
