Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has formally requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to conduct a high-level Investigation into the alleged assault of two Malayali students by Delhi Police officers. The incident reportedly took place on September 24 at Zakir Hussain Delhi College.
In his letter to the Union Home Minister, Vijayan emphasized the need for strict action if the officers involved are found guilty. He described the situation as “deeply saddening” and highlighted media reports suggesting that the students were pressured to speak Hindi during the incident. The two students allegedly attacked are ID Ashwant and K Sudhin, both hailing from Kerala and pursuing higher education in Delhi.
The Chief Minister stressed that citizens and authorities in host states must respect the language and culture of students who come from across India for education. He called the alleged misconduct by law enforcement personnel “extremely unpleasant” and unacceptable.
Vijayan further noted that police officers have a fundamental duty to protect the public from antisocial behavior. If law enforcement themselves commit offenses, it sets a dangerous precedent, potentially encouraging harassment of students and migrant workers. He urged that an impartial investigation be conducted and that the matter be addressed with the seriousness it deserves.
Kerala’s Chief Minister concluded by insisting that justice must be ensured for the affected students and that authorities take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, thereby safeguarding the rights of students and migrant populations in India.
