In a significant diplomatic gesture, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on Thursday conferred the Order of Oman—the Sultanate’s highest and only civilian honour—on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award recognises the Indian Prime Minister’s sustained efforts to deepen and strengthen bilateral relations between India and Oman.
The honour was presented during PM Modi’s two-day official visit to Oman, which marked the final leg of his three-nation tour that also included visits to Ethiopia and Jordan. The visit underscored India’s growing diplomatic outreach in West Asia and Africa.
With this recognition, PM Modi adds yet another accolade to his already distinguished list of more than 28 highest civilian awards conferred by foreign governments. In recent months alone, he has received prestigious honours such as Kuwait’s Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Ethiopia’s Great Honour Nishan, reflecting India’s expanding global stature under his leadership.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Muscat holds special significance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Oman. Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation across key sectors including trade, investment, energy security, defence collaboration, and cultural exchanges.
PM Modi arrived in Oman on Wednesday, where he was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour, highlighting the warmth and mutual respect that characterise India-Oman relations.
Earlier in the week, at the Addis International Convention Center, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the “Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia”. The award recognised his outstanding contributions to strengthening the India-Ethiopia partnership and his role as a globally influential statesman.
Addressing the gathering in Addis Ababa, PM Modi said it was a privilege to receive an award from one of the world’s oldest civilisations. He expressed heartfelt gratitude and dedicated the honour to both Ethiopians and Indians who have worked tirelessly over decades to nurture the bilateral relationship.
Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “I am honoured to be conferred with the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’ and dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India.”
Together, these recognitions from Oman and Ethiopia reinforce Prime Minister Modi’s growing international standing and highlight India’s expanding diplomatic influence across regions, driven by consistent engagement, mutual respect, and a shared vision for global cooperation.
