Hussain Hassan Mirza, the first Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to India, has suggested that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could potentially help de-escalate the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran through diplomatic engagement.
Speaking in an interview with India Today TV, Mirza emphasized India’s unique diplomatic position and its strong relationships with both countries, saying that India could act as a mediator during the crisis.
According to Mirza, India’s growing global influence and Modi’s personal ties with leaders in the region could allow New Delhi to play an important role in reducing tensions.
“India is a wonderful nation. The profile of India — if Mr. Modi calls Iran and Israel to cease, it will cease. Just one phone call,” Mirza said during the interview.
India’s Strategic Relations With Israel and Iran
Mirza highlighted India’s long-standing diplomatic relationships with both Israel and Iran as a key factor that could make mediation possible.
India has developed close strategic ties with Israel in recent years, particularly in areas such as defense cooperation, technology, and security partnerships.
At the same time, New Delhi has maintained stable relations with Iran, particularly in energy trade and regional connectivity projects.
Mirza pointed out that Prime Minister Modi had recently visited Israel and also enjoys positive relations with Iran.
“Mr. Modi was in Israel ten days ago. Mr. Modi’s relationship with Iran is excellent. He is Iran’s largest oil customer. Very simple… One phone call from Mr. Modi will solve the problem,” he said.
| India’s Relations in the Middle East | Key Areas of Cooperation |
|---|---|
| Israel | Defense, technology, security cooperation |
| Iran | Energy trade, regional connectivity projects |
| UAE | Trade, infrastructure development, diaspora ties |
Importance of the Indian Community in the UAE
Mirza also stressed the importance of India’s relationship with the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the large Indian community living and working in the Gulf nation.
More than 3.5 million Indians reside in the UAE, making them the largest expatriate group in the country.
According to Mirza, the Indian community has played a significant role in the UAE’s economic development over several decades.
“I rely too much on the Indian leadership and the government to intervene… to preserve and save their community in our country — the community that helped the infrastructure, helped the trade, helped the business… not from now, 70 or 80 years ago,” Mirza said.
He suggested that India’s involvement in diplomatic efforts could help stabilize the region while also protecting the interests of millions of Indians living in the Gulf.
UAE and Gulf Nations Seek to Avoid Escalation
Mirza also clarified that the United Arab Emirates has taken steps to avoid becoming directly involved in the conflict between Iran and Israel.
According to him, the UAE has not allowed its territory to be used for attacks against Iran.
“On our end, we did not permit any actions against Iran. This is undeniable,” he said.
He added that other Gulf countries, including Kuwait and Qatar, have also reportedly refused to allow military operations against Iran to be launched from their territories.
Conflict Continues to Escalate Across the Region
Mirza’s comments come as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise following military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Iran has responded with a series of missile and drone attacks targeting several locations across the Gulf region.
The United Arab Emirates has also faced attempted drone and missile strikes during the conflict, although most of them were intercepted by the country’s air defense systems.
Despite the attacks, UAE officials have repeatedly stated that their primary focus remains on protecting their territory while preventing the conflict from spreading further across the region.
Analysts say that diplomatic mediation by influential countries such as India could potentially play a role in reducing tensions if the conflict continues to escalate.
