Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for South Africa on Friday for a three-day official visit to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. This marks the first time the G20 Summit is being hosted on the African continent. During his stay, PM Modi will also participate in the 6th India–Brazil–South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, scheduled on the sidelines of the main summit.
Before leaving for Johannesburg, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to presenting India’s global approach rooted in the ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the idea that the world is one family. This aligns with the broader G20 theme of One Earth, One Family, One Future.
Sharing his thoughts ahead of departure, PM Modi said, “I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and One Earth, One Family, and One Future.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi will be in Johannesburg from November 21 to 23 to attend the Republic of South Africa’s 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit. The MEA also highlighted that this is the fourth consecutive G20 Summit hosted in the Global South, underscoring the growing influence and leadership of emerging economies in shaping global decision-making.
Across the three formal sessions at the summit, PM Modi is expected to articulate India’s position on key global challenges and developmental priorities. The first session, focused on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, will cover resilient economies, trade, development financing, and the growing concerns around global debt.
The second session, “A Resilient World,” will delve into food security, climate change, energy transitions, and disaster risk reduction – issues that remain central to the Global South’s development agenda.
The final session, titled “A Fair and Just Future for All,” will address the governance of critical minerals, labor rights and decent work, and the rapidly evolving debate around artificial intelligence.
During his time in Johannesburg, PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders attending the G20 Summit. He will further engage with the vibrant Indian diaspora in South Africa, continuing his tradition of connecting with Indian communities abroad.
