PM Modi’s Multicoloured Safa Steals the Spotlight at 77th Republic Day Parade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi once again drew national attention at the 77th Republic Day celebrations on Kartavya Path, New Delhi, by wearing a striking multicoloured safa that perfectly blended tradition, symbolism, and visual grandeur. The Prime Minister attended the ceremonial parade alongside President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries, reaffirming a tradition he has followed consistently for more than a decade.

Over the years, PM Modi’s Republic Day and Independence Day headgear has evolved into a defining visual feature of national celebrations. His choice of distinctive, regionally inspired turbans—popularly known as safa or pagdi—has often highlighted India’s cultural diversity while reflecting the spirit of the occasion.

This year’s safa stood out for its vivid red-and-yellow base, accentuated with subtle shades of purple and green. Crafted in a traditional tie-and-dye Bandhej style, the turban appeared to draw inspiration from Rajasthan’s rich textile heritage. Worn in a classic Rajasthani drape, it featured intricate Gold detailing, likely woven with zari, adding an unmistakable ceremonial elegance.

As thousands of spectators lined Kartavya Path to witness the grand parade, the Prime Minister’s colourful safa echoed the festive mood of the celebrations, symbolising vibrancy, unity, and continuity of tradition.

Complementing the bold headgear, PM Modi opted for a dark navy-and-white kurta-pyjama ensemble, paired with a light blue Nehru jacket. The outfit maintained his signature balance of understated formality and strong cultural symbolism, a style that has become closely associated with his public appearances on national occasions.

Tribute at National War Memorial

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi paid homage to India’s fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial. The solemn ceremony preceded his arrival at Kartavya Path, where he joined President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries at the saluting dais for the parade.

Republic Day parade highlights

The Republic Day parade began at 10:30 am and is scheduled to last approximately 90 minutes. It showcased India’s cultural diversity, developmental achievements, and growing military strength. The procession featured tableaux from states and Union Territories, newly raised military units, and mock-ups of key weapon systems linked to Operation Sindoor.

This year’s celebrations also marked the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram,” adding historical significance to the event.

In keeping with his tradition of distinctive attire, PM Modi’s 2026 Republic Day look further reinforced the importance of Indian textiles and regional craftsmanship. He wore a red-and-yellow Bandhej safa with a long, elegantly draped tail over his shoulder, pairing it with a cream-coloured churidar kurta and a brown bandhgala coat. The ensemble once again highlighted his consistent effort to merge ceremonial formality with India’s Cultural Heritage.

As in previous years, the Prime Minister’s choice of headgear not only made a strong visual statement but also underscored the enduring connection between national identity, tradition, and modern governance.
