Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before authorities at Tihar Jail on Thursday evening after the Delhi High Court declined to extend the deadline linked to his 2024 conviction in a cheque-bounce case. Jail officials confirmed that Yadav presented himself before the Jail Superintendent at around 4 pm, in compliance with the court’s directions.
The surrender came hours after Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered a stern rebuke to the actor for failing to comply with the High Court’s clear instructions. The judge noted that Yadav had been explicitly ordered on February 2 to surrender on February 4, and that his subsequent non-compliance amounted to a disregard for judicial authority.
While issuing directions for his immediate surrender, the court categorically refused to recall or modify its earlier order requiring Yadav to appear before the Tihar Jail Superintendent. Justice Sharma made it clear that the court would not entertain repeated attempts to delay the execution of its orders.
During the hearing, Yadav’s counsel argued that the actor was unable to surrender on February 4 as he was attempting to arrange funds to repay the complainant in the cheque-bounce case. The lawyer further submitted that Yadav would not have been able to reach Delhi by 4 pm and sought additional time to organise the repayment, urging the court to revoke the surrender order.
However, the High Court rejected the plea outright and expressed strong displeasure over the continued non-compliance. The court observed that the surrender order had been passed on February 2 in the presence of Yadav’s legal team and had already been reaffirmed on February 4, when his earlier request for an extension was turned down.
The court emphasised that there was “no scope for any confusion” regarding the surrender date, pointing out that the February 2 order had been uploaded on the same evening. It further noted that the directions clearly specified when Yadav was required to reach Delhi and surrender, especially since he had already been granted two additional days at his own request.
Justice Sharma underlined the importance of strict compliance with court orders, stating that the rule of law is founded on obedience, not repeated indulgence. The court warned that continued leniency in such cases could create the misleading impression that judicial orders can be ignored without consequence.
“This Court cannot be expected to show or create special circumstances for any person merely because such a person belongs to a particular background or industry,” the judge observed, making it clear that celebrity status offers no exemption from legal accountability.
While acknowledging that sufficient forbearance had already been shown, the High Court said it could not overlook the plight of the complainant. Justice Sharma stressed that justice requires a careful balance between compassion and discipline, and that indulgence cannot be extended indefinitely, particularly when non-compliance continues despite repeated opportunities.
“Under these circumstances, this Court finds no merit in the petitioner’s request to recall the direction requiring Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the Tihar Jail Superintendent,” the court ruled, directing that the actor be taken into custody immediately in accordance with law.
