Global music superstar Shakira might soon perform in the Northeastern city of Guwahati, following the sensational performance by American rapper Post Malone. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that efforts are underway to bring the Colombian pop icon to the state, aiming to enhance Assam’s live concert and entertainment industry.
Sarma said on Sunday, “I am hopeful about bringing more foreign celebrities to cities like Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar. We are also attempting to invite the renowned musician Shakira to Assam. This will give our concert economy new momentum, boost tourism, and highlight the vibrancy of the Northeast.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks follow Post Malone’s performance in Assam on Sunday as part of the government’s concert tourism initiative, approved in May 2025. The program offers concert organizers benefits such as expedited permissions and financial support via viability gap funding.
Assam Post Malone Concert Draws Massive Crowd
Thousands attended the American rapper’s debut show in Assam at the Khanapara Veterinary College. In addition to performing his hit tracks, the Grammy-nominated artist paid tribute to Assamese music sensation Zubeen Garg, who passed away earlier this year.
Earlier in January 2025, Coldplay performed in Assam to a crowd of over 1 lakh, inspiring Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage states to leverage the live concert sector—now termed the “concert economy”. This has ignited competition among Indian states to become hubs for international live performances, offering an alternative to Bollywood and Punjabi pop dominance.
Meghalaya Leads the Concert Tourism Trend
The first Indian state to implement a dedicated concert tourism policy was Meghalaya. Shillong hosts international music festivals every year, drawing artists from around the world. In 2024, Canadian singer Bryan Adams performed at Shillong’s JLN Stadium to massive crowds.
According to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the state earned Rs 133 crore in revenue in 2024 despite investing only Rs 23.3 crore, demonstrating the economic potential of live concerts.
Shakira Could Soon Hit the Brahmaputra Valley
Fans in Assam may soon experience Shakira’s iconic hit “Hips Don’t Lie” live, as the state embraces the growing trend of international concerts. With increasing interest from global artists, Assam is positioning itself as a key destination in India’s emerging live concert and entertainment industry.
| Event | City | Attendance | Revenue / Investment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post Malone Concert | Guwahati | Thousands | Government Incentives |
| Coldplay Performance | Guwahati | Over 1 Lakh | Boosted Concert Economy |
| Bryan Adams Concert | Shillong, Meghalaya | Large Crowd | Revenue Rs 133 Cr / Investment Rs 23.3 Cr |
Assam’s government continues to explore international collaborations, and Shakira’s potential visit could further elevate the state as a vibrant hub for global music and cultural tourism.
