The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to urgently hear a petition seeking the cancellation of the India-Pakistan Cricket match in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
The request for urgent listing was placed before a bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi by an advocate.
However, the bench questioned the urgency of the matter, stating, “What is the urgency? Leave it; it’s just a match. What can be done now for this Sunday’s game?”
When the lawyer argued that the match was scheduled for Sunday and the plea would lose its relevance if not heard by Friday, the bench responded, “Match is this Sunday? How can we address that? Leave it alone. The match should go on.”
The petition, filed by four law students led by Urvashi Jain, argued that hosting a cricket match with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor undermines national dignity and public sentiment.
The much-anticipated India-Pakistan encounter in the Asia Cup 2025 will take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14.
According to the plea, international cricket is meant to promote peace and friendship, but in this context, it sends the wrong message. The petition stated that while Indian soldiers are risking their lives, the country should not be celebrating sports with a nation accused of harboring terrorists.
The petitioners further added that such a decision could deeply hurt the families of victims who lost their lives in terrorist attacks. They emphasized that national security and honor should take precedence over entertainment.
The plea concluded that organizing a cricket match with Pakistan at this time is “detrimental to national interests” and could affect the morale of the armed forces and the sentiments of citizens across the nation.
