Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Male on Friday, following a two-day trip to the United Kingdom, to a lavish welcome from Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. He was accompanied by senior cabinet members, including the Foreign Minister, Defense Minister, Finance Minister, and Homeland Security Minister.
This was the first foreign head of state or government to visit the Maldives since President Muizzu took office, and it was also Narendra Modi’s third visit as prime minister. PM Modi will be the Guest of Honor at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26 at President Muizzu’s request.

The streets of Male, the capital of the Maldives, were lined with the Indian national flag, large posters, and colorful banners in anticipation of his arrival. The Prime Minister was welcomed with decorations at a number of significant roundabouts, such as Republic Square and the key routes that lead from Male International Airport.
To welcome the Prime Minister, members of the Indian diaspora flocked in droves along the road and close to the airport, many of them brandishing the Tricolor and shouting catchphrases. The official and public welcome to PM Modi’s visit, which is regarded as important for regional diplomacy and maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean, was mirrored in the mood in Male.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate a number of development projects funded by India throughout the island nation and engage in extensive talks with President Mohamed Muizzu during his July 25–26 visit to the Maldives.
Many people believe that PM Modi’s visit to the Maldives marks a sea change in the relationship between Male and New Delhi, which had previously cooled under President Mohamed Muizzu.

This year marks 60 years since India and the Maldives established diplomatic ties, Modi said in his farewell statement.
“I look forward to my meetings with President Muizzu and other political leaders to take forward our shared vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, and to deepen our cooperation for peace, prosperity and stability across the Indian Ocean Region,” he stated.
