UFC flyweight contender Charles Johnson is confident fans will see a new dimension of his game when he takes on Asu Almabayev at UFC Fight Night in Baku on June 27. Currently ranked No. 15 in the flyweight division, Johnson views the matchup as a major opportunity to move closer to title contention.
Speaking ahead of the fight, Johnson revealed that his grappling and jiu-jitsu have developed significantly over the past two years and believes those improvements could play a decisive role against the seventh-ranked Almabayev.
Johnson Excited to Showcase Improved Grappling
While many fans see the contest as a clash between two rising contenders, Johnson is eager to highlight a part of his game that he feels has been overlooked.
“What excites me most is the opportunity to show a skill set I’ve been growing in the last two years, which is my grappling and jiu-jitsu,” Johnson said.
The 34-year-old believes the fight will come down to which athlete can successfully impose their preferred style inside the Octagon.
A Battle of Contrasting Styles
Johnson acknowledged that he and Almabayev bring very different strengths into the matchup. However, after studying his opponent closely, he believes there are several areas where he can capitalize.
“Our styles are very different from each other. It’s mostly a battle of wills and who can make their fight happen in there,” Johnson explained.
He added that he has identified opportunities to neutralize Almabayev’s strengths and create favorable situations throughout the contest.
Johnson Believes He Is Still Underrated
Despite notable victories throughout his UFC career, including being the only fighter to defeat current flyweight champion Joshua Van, Johnson feels he does not always receive the recognition he deserves.
The American credits his success to constant improvement and dedication, having entered martial arts later than many professional fighters.
“Martial arts was not given to me. It was not something I inherited. It’s something I earned over time,” Johnson said.
Title Implications on the Line
A victory over Almabayev could significantly boost Johnson’s standing in the flyweight division and potentially earn him a top-five opponent in his next outing.
While rankings are often debated, Johnson believes they remain important for career progression and future opportunities.
“Being in the top 10 and beating Asu will give me an opportunity at a top-five opponent,” he stated.
Life Beyond the Octagon
Outside of mixed martial arts, Johnson enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He also raises chickens in his backyard and is an avid gamer.
One of his recent hobbies has been playing UFC 6, where he can now select himself as a playable character—a moment he describes as surreal after years of playing video games.
With a crucial fight ahead and a chance to move closer to championship contention, Johnson believes his best performances are still to come.
