Ben Stokes etched his name into the history books on Day 2 of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge by becoming only the second cricketer in Test history to score 7,000 runs and claim 250 wickets. The England captain joined South African legend Jacques Kallis in achieving the remarkable all-round milestone.
Stokes Reaches Historic Test Milestone
The landmark moment came on the final ball of the 101st over when Stokes dismissed Mitchell Santner. The England skipper produced a sharp bouncer that brushed Santner’s arm guard before looping to gully, where Jacob Bethell completed a comfortable catch.
It was Stokes’ fourth wicket of the innings and his 250th Test scalp, completing the rare double of 7,000 Test runs and 250 wickets. Santner departed for just four runs as New Zealand slipped to 413/7.
England Fight Back After New Zealand’s Dominant Start
New Zealand dominated the opening day thanks to a massive 317-run partnership between captain Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Latham scored 151 while Conway added a superb 157 to put the visitors in complete control.
England responded strongly on Day 2, with Stokes leading the bowling attack. The all-rounder dismissed Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke and Mitchell Santner to spark a much-needed comeback in the series decider.
Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer and Joe Root also chipped in with one wicket each as England pulled things back after New Zealand’s commanding start.
Historic Achievement for England Captain
Stokes’ latest milestone further strengthens his reputation as one of the greatest all-rounders of the modern era. Only Jacques Kallis had previously managed the extraordinary feat of combining 7,000 Test runs with 250 Test wickets, making the England captain’s achievement one of the rarest records in cricket history.
