Jos Verstappen Reveals Surprising Target for Max Verstappen Over the Next Decade

Max Verstappen could have a very different motorsport career by 2036, according to his father Jos Verstappen. The former Formula 1 driver believes his son may no longer be competing in F1 a decade from now, but expects him to remain active in racing.

Max Verstappen has previously indicated that he does not necessarily want to spend his entire career in Formula 1. The Dutchman has expressed an interest in competing in other racing categories and spending more time with his family.

His current Red Bull Racing contract runs until 2028, although his long-term future in F1 remains uncertain.

Jos Verstappen wants Max to win Le Mans

Looking ahead to 2036, Jos Verstappen revealed that he hopes his son will have achieved one of his major ambitions by then: winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Speaking to AUTOhebdo, Jos said:

“I don’t think he’ll be in F1 anymore, and I hope he’ll have won Le Mans by then. But winning Le Mans isn’t that simple these days either with the Balance of Performance, the whole field is very tight.”

Jos nevertheless expects Max to continue racing in some form, even if his Formula 1 career has come to an end.

“We’ll see; it will be a challenge. But I’m sure he’ll still be racing then, just not in F1.”

Max Verstappen’s F1 future remains uncertain

Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull expires at the end of 2028, but there has been continued speculation surrounding his future with the team.

Reports have suggested that tensions between Verstappen’s camp and Red Bull could potentially lead to an earlier departure. There have also been claims that the Dutchman could activate a release clause and leave the team as early as the end of the 2026 season.

Such a move could see Verstappen join another F1 team or potentially consider stepping away from Formula 1 altogether. More clarity regarding his future is expected during or after the summer break.

Jos Verstappen praises his son’s character

Jos also spoke positively about Max’s personality and achievements during the interview. The former F1 driver described his son as an honest and down-to-earth person and expressed immense pride in his accomplishments.

When asked to describe Max as both a person and a driver, Jos said:

“As a person, he is a great guy with a wonderful character. He is very down-to-earth and honest. He is everything you could want in a son. I am truly very proud of him.”

Jos also believes Max has already surpassed the expectations his family had for his racing career.

“And as a driver, he has surpassed anything we could have ever hoped for. If he has the right equipment, he will surely win more championships. It all depends on the car he has at his disposal.”

Max could pursue racing beyond Formula 1

Jos Verstappen’s comments underline the possibility of Max building a long-term career across different forms of motorsport rather than limiting himself to Formula 1.

With endurance racing and the Le Mans 24 Hours already among his interests, a future outside F1 could give the four-time world champion the opportunity to explore new challenges while continuing his passion for racing.

For now, however, Max Verstappen remains focused on his Formula 1 career, with his next major decision likely to determine whether he remains with Red Bull or considers a new chapter elsewhere.
