According to reports, Manchester United has surpassed Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa in their shortlist to make Benjamin Sesko their top target for the striker position ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
After determining that the Slovenian forward best matches their desired profile, United has already made exploratory contact with RB Leipzig, according to a report from The Athletic. Sesko just agreed to a new deal with Leipzig that will keep him there until 2029. However, there is an understanding that if a top club comes in with an offer in the region of 80 to 90 million euros, the German side would be willing to let him leave.
Newcastle United are also said to be monitoring Sesko’s situation closely, especially with uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak, who has reportedly informed the club that he wants to explore his options in the transfer window.
Ollie Watkins has also drawn interest from Manchester United, but Aston Villa has stated that the England international is not up for grabs. Villa is committed to keeping Watkins, who continues to play a key role in Unai Emery’s plans.
Sesko’s acquisition would represent a change from United’s current transfer policy, which has been centered on players with Premier League experience under Ruben Amorim. To strengthen their offense, they have already added Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.
It’s interesting to note that United had been interested in Sesko since 2019 while he was still at RB Salzburg, but they refused to pay the three million euro cost because they thought it was too excessive. Sesko has since grown into one of the most talented young strikers in Europe.
Amorim is under pressure to make a swift turnaround after United’s terrible 2024–25 season, in which they lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final and ended 15th in the Premier League. The club will be eager to finalize important additions and make sure the team is tactically prepared before the new season starts, since pre-season preparations are already under way.
Sesko’s possible acquisition might be a significant step in the rebuild and indicate United’s desire to reclaim the top spot in English Football.
