Naraku WWE NXT return became one of the biggest surprises on this week’s episode of NXT. The former IWGP World Champion made his unexpected comeback during a high-stakes match and played a decisive role in determining the next challenger for the NXT North American Championship.
Naraku Returns to WWE NXT
Naraku, formerly known as EVIL, had not appeared on WWE NXT since July 21. His previous storyline involved a heated rivalry with Tony D’Angelo over the NXT Championship.
After suffering a defeat to D’Angelo at The Great American Bash, Naraku was unable to turn things around in their subsequent Street Fight. The latest NXT appearance suggests that the former world champion could now be heading toward a different rivalry.
Naraku Interferes in North American Championship Contender Match
Jackson Drake and Shiloh Hill faced each other in a singles match on NXT, with the winner earning an opportunity to challenge for the NXT North American Championship.
The match was closely contested, with both competitors exchanging offensive moves and gaining momentum at different stages. Myka Lockwood eventually attempted to interfere and help Drake.
However, referee Derek Sanders noticed Lockwood’s involvement and removed her from ringside, leaving Drake and Hill to continue the contest without her presence.
Naraku Uses Mist to Help Jackson Drake
Just when the match appeared to be reaching its conclusion, Naraku suddenly appeared at ringside. The former NJPW star sprayed mist into Shiloh Hill’s face while the referee was unable to see the interference.
Drake immediately took advantage of the situation. With Hill compromised, Drake connected with a 450 Splash and secured the pinfall victory.
Naraku’s interference therefore directly influenced the outcome of the match and helped Drake earn his opportunity at the NXT North American Championship.
Jackson Drake to Challenge Myles Borne at Heatwave 2026
Following his victory, Jackson Drake will challenge Myles Borne for the NXT North American Championship at Heatwave 2026.
The premium live event is scheduled to take place at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, on August 30.
Borne is also scheduled for another championship responsibility at the event. He will defend the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Taivon Heights against Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes of The Vanity Project.
Naraku’s NXT Championship Storyline Appears to Be Over
Naraku’s recent defeats to Tony D’Angelo appear to have moved him away from the NXT Championship picture for now. His surprise interference against Shiloh Hill could instead lead to a new rivalry between the two wrestlers.
The angle also gives Naraku a fresh direction following his unsuccessful pursuit of the NXT Championship. His involvement in Drake’s victory suggests that he could remain an important factor in the North American Championship storyline.
What Could Be Next for Naraku?
The immediate question is whether Naraku will continue supporting Jackson Drake or whether his actions were primarily designed to target Shiloh Hill.
With Drake now set to challenge Myles Borne at Heatwave 2026, Naraku could potentially remain involved in the North American Championship picture. At the same time, Hill has a clear reason to seek revenge after Naraku cost him the opportunity to become the number one contender.
For now, Naraku’s return has added another layer of uncertainty to WWE NXT, with the former world champion seemingly beginning a new chapter after his rivalry with Tony D’Angelo.
