New York Jets 34-32 Pittsburgh Steelers

In his Steelers debut, Aaron Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes, and Pittsburgh defeated the New York Jets in a thrilling game. Chris Boswell had just over a minute left when he made the game-winning 60-yard field goal. With 56 seconds left, the Jets, who had lost in coach Aaron Glenn’s first game, had a chance to drive for a field goal that may have won the game. On fourth-and-three, Justin Fields connected with Garrett Wilson for what could have been a first down – but Jalen Ramsey smacked into the Jets receiver, who couldn’t hold on to the ball. Fields, also playing against his former team, ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Rodgers was 22 of 30 for 244 yards with four TD passes.

Indianapolis Colts 8–33 Miami Dolphins

In his Indianapolis debut, Daniel Jones led the host Colts to a resounding victory over the Miami Dolphins with one touchdown throw and two more runs.

The Colts forced three early turnovers to score 30 points in a row, and Jones, who was selected over Anthony Richardson in the preseason, completed 22 of 29 throws for 272 yards. While the Dolphins turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions, giving Indianapolis 17 points, the Colts scored on all seven of their possessions. Tua Tagovailoa was responsible for all three of those giveaways, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble on a strip sack by Kenny Moore II that was recovered by former Dolphins safety Xavien Howard.

New York Giants 6–21 Commanders of Washington

Deebo Samuel scored in his Washington debut, Jayden Daniels threw for 233 yards and a touchdown, and the Commanders easily defeated the New York Giants without allowing them to reach the end zone. Washington’s defense fared significantly better against the Giants than it did against Philadelphia, which they last allowed 55 points to in the NFC championship game. New York was especially bad at rushing the ball and only mustered 231 yards of offense. In his debut start with New York, Russell Wilson was never given a chance to look at ease by the Commanders, and Daron Payne had a sack and swatted down a third-down ball. Wilson gained 168 yards on 17 of 37 plays.

Cleveland Browns 17–16 Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati defense defeated the Cleveland Browns by a slim margin. DJ Turner’s interception with 1:24 remaining was one of two second-half turnovers forced by the Bengals under new coach Al Golden. It was Cincinnati’s first opener victory since 2021. Andre Szmyt, the new kicker for Cleveland, missed two important kicks, including one that may have won the game. Joe Burrow completed 14 of 23 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. The Browns outgained the Bengals 327-141 but fell short on the day. Joe Flacco passed for 290 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

New England Patriots 20–13 Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders overcame the New England Patriots after Geno Smith passed for 362 yards and a touchdown, youngster Ashton Jeanty rushed for his first career touchdown, and more. Tight end Brock Bowers had five catches for 103 yards before leaving in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. Jakobi Meyers added eight catches for 97 yards. Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce also added sacks to help give Pete Carroll his first victory as Raiders coach.

Atlanta Falcons 23–20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay defeated the Falcons in a thrilling game after surrendering the lead on a long drive by Atlanta. Rookie Emeka Egbuka caught two touchdown receptions, including the game-winning 25-yarder with 59 seconds left. Chase McLaughlin’s missed extra point after Baker Mayfield’s 25-yard pass to Egbuka allowed the Falcons to force OT with a field goal. Michael Penix Jr moved the Falcons into field goal position in the final minute. On the 44-yarder, Younghoe Koo was wide right.

New Orleans Saints 20–13 Arizona Cardinals

Kellen Moore’s NFL head coaching debut was ruined by the visiting Arizona Cardinals, who had two touchdown passes from Kyler Murray.

Murray completed 21 of 29 throws for a meager 163 yards, but his TD passes to James Conner and Marvin Harrison Jr. were crucial for the Cardinals, who finished 8-9 the previous season. Moore, who was hired by New Orleans after serving as offensive coordinator for Philadelphia during the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl the previous season, had Spencer Rattler complete 27 of 45 for 214 yards without any touchdowns. The Saints, who finished 5-12 the previous season, lost their NFL-long winning streak of six straight season openers after being penalized 13 times for 89 yards.
