Rohit Sharma suffered his first duck in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in three years after being dismissed for zero against New Zealand in the opening match of India’s five-match series at Eden Park in Auckland. Chasing a target of 187, the Indian opener lasted just six deliveries before falling to New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson in the opening over.
The dismissal ended Rohit’s impressive run of 39 consecutive ODI innings without a duck. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner completed the catch at mid-off after Rohit mistimed his shot on a surface where the ball was holding up slightly.
Rohit’s early departure was a disappointing moment for India, particularly given his consistent performances in the format over the past three years. The experienced opener had established himself among India’s leading run-scorers during that period, making the latest dismissal a notable milestone in his ODI career.
Rohit Sharma records first ODI duck since 2023 World Cup
Rohit’s previous ODI duck came on October 7, 2023, against Australia during the opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Since that dismissal, he had completed 39 ODI innings without being dismissed for zero.
During that period, Rohit continued to play a major role in India’s batting lineup, scoring five centuries in the format. His ability to provide aggressive starts and convert them into substantial innings made him one of the team’s most dependable top-order batters.
The dismissal against Jamieson brought that run to an end. Rohit attempted to play a shot in the opening over, but the ball did not come onto the bat as expected. He failed to make proper contact, sending the ball towards Santner at mid-off, where the New Zealand captain completed the catch.
Although the six-ball duck ended a significant personal run, it came in the opening stages of a five-match series, giving Rohit further opportunities to respond in the remaining matches.
Rohit Sharma’s recent ODI form before New Zealand series
Rohit entered the New Zealand series after a productive home campaign against the West Indies. He scored 32, 101 and 92 across the three matches, including a century and a near-century that demonstrated his ability to deliver substantial contributions at the top of the order.
His overall numbers in ODIs during the year had also been impressive. In 13 matches, Rohit accumulated 604 runs at an average of 46.46, registering two centuries and two half-centuries.
Those performances had reinforced his importance to India’s batting plans. His experience and attacking approach have made him a key figure in the team’s top order, particularly when setting the tone during the opening overs.
The Auckland dismissal, however, highlighted how quickly conditions can influence an innings. With the ball holding on the surface, Rohit was unable to time his shot and lost his wicket before India could build a substantial opening partnership.
India’s fast bowlers restrict New Zealand to 186
Before Rohit’s dismissal, India’s pace attack had delivered an impressive performance to restrict New Zealand to 186. Captain Shubman Gill opted to bowl first and included four fast bowlers in the playing XI, a decision that produced encouraging results on the bouncy Eden Park surface.
Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh led the bowling effort with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar claimed three dismissals. Their contributions put pressure on New Zealand’s batting lineup and helped India keep the target within reach.
Haryana fast bowler Anshul Kamboj also played an important role with a disciplined spell. He finished with figures of 2 for 22 from his 10 overs, including two maiden overs, and maintained an economy rate of just 2.20.
Anshul Kamboj matches notable Indian bowling economy record
Kamboj’s economy rate of 2.20 was particularly significant. It was the best economy rate by an Indian fast bowler since Jasprit Bumrah recorded the same figure against Zimbabwe in 2016.
Bumrah had finished with figures of 4 for 22 in 10 overs, including one maiden, during that match. Kamboj’s performance against New Zealand therefore placed him alongside Bumrah in the record books for economy among Indian pacers.
His ability to maintain control throughout the 10-over spell helped India restrict New Zealand to a manageable total. The figures were also the joint-best in terms of economy among all Indian fast bowlers since 2005, according to the supplied match statistics.
India look to recover after Rohit’s early dismissal
Rohit’s departure for a six-ball duck gave New Zealand an early breakthrough during India’s chase of 187. Jamieson’s dismissal of the experienced opener provided the hosts with an opportunity to put pressure on the Indian batting lineup.
For India, the challenge was to recover quickly and build partnerships while pursuing the target. Despite Rohit’s disappointing start, his recent ODI numbers and consistent record over the previous three years remain important indicators of his contribution to the team.
The five-match series against New Zealand also offers Rohit an opportunity to return to form. His first ODI duck since the 2023 World Cup may have ended a notable personal streak, but the focus will now shift to how he responds in the upcoming matches.
