South Africa’s stand-in Test captain aiden markram has identified Babar Azam as the key player his team must dismiss early in the upcoming Pakistan vs South Africa Test series, which begins on October 12 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Markram acknowledged that although Babar’s recent run of form has been below his usual standards, he remains a world-class batter capable of turning any match around.
Babar Azam, who last scored an international hundred on August 30, 2023, has struggled for consistency across formats. During the most recent World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, the 30-year-old scored just 539 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 23.43. However, Markram was quick to praise the Pakistani star’s pedigree and class, stating that his wicket will be a top priority for the Proteas.
“Babar Azam is a world-class player who needs no introduction. His wicket will be a big one for us, and we’ll aim to bowl well and take key wickets early,” said Markram during a pre-match media interaction.
The Proteas captain further acknowledged the home advantage that Pakistan enjoys, emphasizing that South Africa will need to adapt quickly to local conditions.
“We accept that playing at home is always a major advantage. We’ll adjust quickly and give our best effort,” Markram added, reflecting confidence ahead of the opening Test.
South Africa Ready for Pakistan’s Spin Challenge
Markram also revealed that his side is fully prepared to face Pakistan’s spin-friendly pitches and the challenges that come with subcontinental conditions. The Proteas have focused their training sessions on improving their performance against quality spin bowling.
“It will be difficult to play on spin-friendly wickets in Pakistan, but our team is ready for the challenge,” said the South African captain, indicating that the visitors have done their homework ahead of the Test series.
Shan Masood: “To Win, Pakistan Must Take 20 Wickets”
Meanwhile, Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has stated that his side’s success against South Africa will depend on their ability to claim 20 wickets in each match. Masood emphasized the importance of disciplined bowling and teamwork if Pakistan wants to start their new WTC cycle on a strong note.
After drawing their most recent home Test series against the West Indies, Pakistan is confident of performing better in front of their home crowd. Masood credited the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for taking major steps to improve the scheduling and consistency of Test cricket in the country.
“This time, the PCB has taken excellent measures to bridge the gaps between Test series, which previously affected our rhythm after the Bangladesh tour,” Masood remarked.
He added, “We need to take 20 wickets to win matches. That will be our primary focus heading into the series.”
According to Masood, consistent performances in home Test series will play a defining role in Pakistan’s success in the new WTC cycle.
“If you want to do well in the World Test Championship, performing strongly at home is absolutely vital,” the Pakistan skipper stated confidently.
The much-anticipated Pakistan vs South Africa Test series will begin on October 12 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, promising an intense battle between two competitive sides. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see if Babar Azam can rediscover his touch or if the Proteas bowlers will execute their plans perfectly under Markram’s leadership.
