Toto Wolff Takes Ferrari Dig as Mercedes Leads 2026 F1 Power Unit Battle

Toto Wolff has taken a pointed swipe at Ferrari while defending Mercedes’ position in the 2026 Formula 1 power-unit battle. The Mercedes team principal argued that Ferrari has a highly competitive power unit despite its repeated claims that it does not have the strongest engine.

Power-unit performance has become a major talking point during the opening phase of the new regulations era. The FIA identified the Red Bull-Ford combustion engine as the benchmark after the first races of the season, leading to discussions around the ADUO process and opportunities for rival manufacturers to close the gap.

Toto Wolff Responds to Ferrari Complaints

Several leading teams, including Ferrari and Red Bull, have raised concerns about the way the ADUO process evaluates power-unit performance, particularly because it focuses on the internal combustion engine rather than the complete power unit.

Wolff believes Mercedes may have the strongest overall package, but he also suggested that Ferrari is much closer to the front than its public complaints might indicate.

“The FIA says on the combustion engine, it’s Red Bull (that is the benchmark). That’s how they measure. Maybe as an overall package, it’s us,” Wolff said, according to RacingNews365.

He then aimed a subtle dig at Ferrari, saying the Italian team has an “absolutely competitive power unit” despite its complaints about engine performance.

Mercedes Leads Ferrari in 2026 Constructors’ Standings

Mercedes has established itself as the leading team after the first half of the 2026 season. The Silver Arrows sit at the top of the constructors’ championship with 379 points, holding a 72-point advantage over Ferrari.

Kimi Antonelli has also emerged as the championship leader in the drivers’ standings. The Mercedes youngster holds a 50-point advantage over Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari has nevertheless shown enough pace to challenge Mercedes on individual weekends, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc each securing a race victory during the 2026 campaign.

Wolff Rules Out Another Mercedes-Like Era of Dominance

Wolff also believes Formula 1 is unlikely to witness the kind of prolonged dominance Mercedes enjoyed at the beginning of the hybrid era in 2014.

The Austrian executive explained that Mercedes’ advantage during that period was largely driven by a significantly superior power unit. According to Wolff, the performance gap between manufacturers is much smaller under the current regulations.

“What made us so dominant at the beginning of the 2014 hybrid era was that for a long time our power unit was very much dominant. Today you can see that Ferrari is very close to us,” Wolff said.

He added that a setup mistake or an upgrade advantage for Ferrari could quickly change the competitive picture.

Mercedes Faces Pressure Despite Championship Lead

Mercedes’ championship advantage has also been affected by reliability difficulties during the season. Those issues have prevented the team from turning its performance advantage into an even larger points gap.

With Ferrari already having two victories in 2026 and the gap between the manufacturers remaining relatively close, Wolff expects the championship battle to become increasingly competitive as the season progresses.
