Two young trainees staying at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Kollam district of Kerala were found dead on Thursday, triggering shock and grief within the sporting community. The deceased have been identified as Sandra, aged 17 and a native of Kozhikode, and Vyshnavi, aged 15, from Thiruvananthapuram.
According to officials, concern arose when the girls did not turn up for their scheduled morning training session. Hostel authorities attempted to reach them multiple times before deciding to inspect their room at approximately 5 am.
When there was no response from inside, staff members forced the door open and found both trainees hanging from ceiling fans inside the room. Emergency services were alerted immediately, and the local police were informed soon after.
Police officials stated that other trainees had seen the two girls together late on Wednesday night. There were no reports of any disturbance or unusual behaviour prior to the incident, based on preliminary accounts from hostel residents.
A formal investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Police confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the room, and the exact cause behind the tragic incident remains unclear at this stage.
Sandra, who was studying in Class 12, was undergoing intensive sports training at the SAI hostel. Vyshnavi, a Kabaddi player and Class 10 student, was also enrolled in the training programme. Police sources noted that Vyshnavi generally stayed in a different room but chose to spend Wednesday night in Sandra’s room.
The bodies have been shifted for post-mortem examination, following which they will be handed over to their respective families for last rites. Authorities have assured that all aspects, including personal, institutional, and environmental factors, will be examined as part of the inquiry.
