Von Miller Reveals How Dak Prescott Vegas Meeting Led to Cowboys Move

Von Miller has finally completed his long-awaited homecoming after signing a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys. The deal is worth $5.5 million and can reach $7.5 million with incentives, giving the veteran pass rusher an opportunity to play for his hometown team.

Miller revealed that his move to Dallas came together unexpectedly. Speaking to reporters at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, the eight-time Pro Bowler recalled meeting quarterback Dak Prescott at a casino lounge in Las Vegas roughly one month before the Cowboys contacted him.

At the time of the meeting, Miller had no indication that he would eventually become a Cowboys player. He was still considering his options in free agency when he crossed paths with Prescott.

The two players spent time together talking and gambling. Miller also encouraged Prescott to believe that the Cowboys could finally make a breakthrough during the upcoming season.

“It’s crazy because I ran into Dak in Vegas probably like a month ago,” Miller said.

Miller explained that he told Prescott it was time for Dallas to break through and suggested that the team had the pieces necessary to make a deep run.

The veteran pass rusher then revealed that he had no idea a move to Dallas was about to become a possibility.

“And I didn’t have any inkling on being a Dallas Cowboy. It just happened naturally. And then the Cowboys reached out and I was just like, ‘Bro, this is a sign. This is a sign for me.’”

Von Miller joins Cowboys after strong 2025 season

Miller was still exploring free agency when Dallas eventually made contact. The move gives the Cowboys an experienced pass rusher who is entering his 15th NFL campaign.

The former Super Bowl MVP is coming off a nine-sack season with Washington in 2025. He now joins a Dallas defensive front featuring Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku and rookie Malachi Lawrence.

Miller’s career résumé also makes him one of the most accomplished defensive players on the Cowboys roster. He currently has 138.5 career sacks and is the NFL’s active career sack leader. His total places him ninth on the league’s all-time sack list, tied with former Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware.

For Miller, joining Dallas carries a significance that goes beyond football. He was raised in suburban DeSoto, located roughly 20 minutes from AT&T Stadium, and grew up watching his father celebrate Cowboys championships.

Miller later became an All-American at Texas A&M before establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers. Now, he has the opportunity to represent the team he grew up around.

During his introductory press conference, Miller spoke about what it means to finally wear Cowboys colors.

“This should be the first year where everybody’s unified on one team, so it’s pretty cool to have everybody in blue,” Miller said.

The veteran had previously considered joining Dallas, including after winning his second Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams following the 2021 season. However, that opportunity never materialized.

This time, the circumstances were different, and Miller believes everything came together at the right moment.

Miller enters his latest chapter with considerable experience and a proven record of performing in high-pressure situations. He has won two Super Bowls and was named Super Bowl 50 MVP during his career.

The Cowboys will hope that experience translates into meaningful production from their veteran pass rusher. Miller believes he can remain effective in a similar role with Dallas and expects to contribute when the biggest moments arrive.
