Both free and premium ChatGPT users are now able to access OpenAI’s most recent language model, GPT-5. Performance and safety enhancements, wider system integrations, and additional variations are all included in the upgrade. So, how do you get to use ChatGPT 5? It’s easy; the new ChatGPT-5 welcome screen will appear instantly. It’s a staged roll out so it may take a while for everyone to be on GPT-5. However, you can always try to relogin to check.

In OpenAI’s long-term quest for artificial general intelligence, GPT-5 is being positioned as a significant advancement. The model is internally referred to as generally intelligent, despite not meeting AGI standards as outlined in OpenAI’s own charter. After deployment, it lacks the capacity to learn.

In comparison to previous iterations, the business asserts that GPT-5 is more accurate, efficient, and has lower hallucination rates. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said the leap from GPT-4 to GPT-5 is comparable to the display upgrade from early iPhones to Retina displays.

Two new model variants have been launched: GPT-5-mini, a lightweight version, and GPT-5-nano, a faster and cheaper model available only via API. Free users will have access to GPT-5 and GPT-5-mini. Paid tiers unlock higher usage limits, with the $200/month Pro tier offering GPT-5-pro, GPT-5-thinking, and unlimited access.

Based on user plan and query complexity, the ChatGPT interface now automatically chooses the best model. Pro users can still access legacy models.

GPT-5 costs $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens for the API. The cost of GPT-5-mini is $0.25 for every million input tokens and $2 for every million output tokens. The cost of GPT-5-nano is $0.40 per million output tokens and $0.05 per million input tokens. The nano version is currently less expensive than the Gemini 2.5 Flash from Google.

Pro customers will be able to link ChatGPT with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts starting next week. Later, access will be granted to further tiers. Without requiring manual selection, ChatGPT will automatically refer to these accounts when appropriate.

Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd are the four pre-programmed characters from which users can now choose. Additionally, Advanced Voice Mode will be integrated with these modes. You can also change the chat color.

The API allows toggling between detailed and direct responses. Unlike the preceding o3 model, which had a context window of 200,000 tokens, GPT-5 has a context window of 256,000 tokens. Better retention over lengthy discussions, code, and papers is made possible by this.

In coding challenges, GPT-5 performs better than previous models. The benchmarks are 88 percent on Aider Polyglot, 55 percent on SWE-Lancer utilizing GPT-5-thinking, and 74.9 percent on SWE-Bench Verified. These include activities like bug fixes, multilingual support, and freelance work.

The OpenAI team gave GPT-5 instructions to create an interactive language-learning application during a demonstration. Within a minute, the system produced the desired features and user interface. According to OpenAI, the model can manage intricate task chains and tool usage, including calls made via browsers and APIs.

HealthBench Hard gave GPT-5-thinking a score of 25.5 percent, while o3 received a score of 31.6 percent. Medical experts have evaluated the results of OpenAI’s new model, which it claims performs better on a variety of health-related activities.

According to the corporation, the number of hallucinations has decreased. GPT-5-thinking displays a rate that is 26% lower than GPT-4o and 65% lower than o3. Safety updates include reduced chances of the model producing deceptive, hacked or unsafe outputs. Dual-use prompts are handled with what OpenAI calls “safe completions”, offering responses within controlled boundaries. Over 5,000 hours of red teaming and external testing were conducted to improve robustness.

When confronted with intractable prompts, the system is built to fail safely. This involves declining duties that are beyond its capability without producing deceptive results.

According to OpenAI, there are four million developers using the API, five million paid enterprise users, and 700 million weekly ChatGPT users.
