Canada is grappling with shock and grief after a tragic shooting unfolded Wednesday afternoon at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Authorities have confirmed that at least ten people, including the suspected female gunwoman, lost their lives in what is being described as one of the most severe acts of violence in the country’s recent history.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers received reports of an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. on February 10. Law enforcement immediately responded to the emergency call, securing the school premises and issuing a police-initiated public alert warning residents of the unfolding situation.
Initial findings indicate that six victims were pronounced dead inside the school building. Another individual succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. The confirmed death toll later rose to ten, including the suspect, after investigators discovered two additional victims deceased at a residential property believed to be connected to the incident.
Suspect Found Dead Inside School
Police confirmed that the suspected shooter was found deceased inside the school from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted wound. Superintendent Ken Floyd stated that authorities do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public and that no additional suspects are currently being sought.
An emergency alert circulated earlier in the day described the suspect as “a female in a dress with brown hair.” Superintendent Floyd later confirmed that the individual identified in the alert was the same person found dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, nor have they disclosed how many of those killed or injured were minors. Officials have also refrained from commenting on a potential motive, stating that the investigation remains active. Earlier in the response, police had indicated they were assessing reports of a possible second suspect, but no further information has confirmed that possibility.
Residents Urged to Shelter Indoors
In addition to the fatalities, at least two individuals were transported to hospital with severe or potentially life-threatening injuries. Approximately 25 others were treated at a nearby medical facility for non-life-threatening wounds.
Law enforcement secured both the school and surrounding areas, urging residents to remain indoors as a precaution.
“We ask everyone in the Tumbler Ridge area to stay inside, lock your doors, and do not leave your home or place of business at this time,” police stated in their public advisory. “Those outside the immediate area must avoid entering and follow all police directions and restrictions.”
As part of the ongoing investigation, officers identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were discovered deceased inside a residence. Authorities are continuing to examine nearby properties to determine whether anyone else may have been harmed or linked to the events.
Additional RCMP personnel from neighboring detachments were deployed to assist with securing the area and managing the complex investigation.
“This was a dynamic and rapidly evolving situation,” Superintendent Ken Floyd said during a press briefing. “The swift cooperation of school officials, first responders, and community members was critical to our response. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected. This has been an incredibly emotional and difficult day for our community.”
Political Leaders React to Tragedy
Political leaders across Canada expressed sorrow and solidarity with the victims’ families. Mark Carney stated that he was deeply shaken by the incident.
“The terrible shootings that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, today have devastated me,” he wrote. “My deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these senseless acts of violence.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of first responders, praising their bravery and commitment during the crisis. Carney confirmed that he had spoken with public safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and British Columbia Premier David Eby to coordinate federal and provincial support.
“Our officials remain in constant contact with their counterparts to ensure the community receives every possible form of assistance,” he stated. “The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians during this painful time.”
Local MLA Larry Neufeld announced he was returning from Victoria to support his constituents directly as the community begins the process of mourning and recovery.
Police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that further details will be released as they become available. Authorities continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and examine both locations connected to the tragedy.
