Airport Strike Damages Iran Air Passenger Plane on Ground: Report

A significant escalation in the ongoing IranIsrael conflict has emerged after reports that an Iran Air passenger aircraft was destroyed on the ground during Israeli Airstrikes in southern Iran. The development marks a troubling expansion of the confrontation into civilian aviation infrastructure.

According to Iranian media outlets cited by Reuters, the aircraft was struck during an attack on Bushehr Airport, located in the southern port city of Bushehr along the Persian Gulf. The reported destruction of a civilian airliner raises serious concerns about the widening scope of military operations.

Passenger Aircraft Destroyed at Bushehr Airport

Iranian news agencies stated that the strike “destroyed on the ground” a passenger airliner belonging to Iran Air. There was no immediate confirmation regarding casualties, nor clarity on whether the aircraft was scheduled for service at the time of the attack.

The incident comes amid a sustained wave of Israeli strikes targeting multiple locations across Iran, including military installations and strategic facilities.

Bushehr holds strategic importance not only as a port city but also as the site of Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant. The proximity of military operations to such sensitive infrastructure has amplified international concerns.

Mehrabad Airport Also Targeted

The strikes were not limited to Bushehr. Mehrabad Airport in Tehran – one of Iran’s two primary airports mainly serving domestic flights – was also reportedly targeted.

Images released by Iran’s Mehr news agency showed thick grey smoke rising near what appeared to be a runway. The outlet described the incident as an attack by “American-Zionist terrorists” on the area surrounding Mehrabad in western Tehran.

The targeting of aviation hubs signals a shift in the operational landscape, as civilian infrastructure increasingly falls within the orbit of military engagement.

Rosatom Halts Construction at Bushehr Nuclear Plant

In a parallel development, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom announced it has suspended construction work on additional units at the Bushehr nuclear power facility.

Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev confirmed that work on the plant’s second and third units had been halted due to the deteriorating security situation.

“It is difficult to predict the further course of events, given the ongoing military operations against Iran,” Likhachev said. “But our people will remain there in any case, and this facility will be among our priorities.”

He also warned about the risks associated with military operations near nuclear facilities, noting that explosions had been heard “just kilometres away” from the plant, although the facility itself was not directly targeted.

Communication Disruptions and Evacuations Underway

Likhachev revealed that while Rosatom continues to maintain contact with staff at the construction site, communication with Iran’s nuclear industry leadership has been disrupted. There is currently no stable phone or electronic contact with senior Iranian officials overseeing the nuclear program.

According to Rosatom, 639 Russian personnel remain in Iran. Some individuals who were previously stationed in Tehran are in the process of leaving the country.

Nearly 100 workers and their family members were evacuated on Saturday when US and Israeli strikes began. Likhachev stated that further evacuations would be conducted during pauses in air raids to ensure safety.

Escalation with Broader Implications

The reported destruction of a civilian aircraft and the suspension of nuclear construction projects reflect a deepening crisis with potentially far-reaching consequences.

The targeting of airport infrastructure raises alarms about the safety of civilian aviation, while military activity near nuclear facilities introduces additional geopolitical and environmental risks.

As Israeli strikes continue and international stakeholders monitor the situation closely, the conflict appears to be expanding beyond traditional military targets – now directly affecting civilian infrastructure and foreign industrial operations on Iranian soil.
