Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in Brasilia after being diagnosed with pneumonia. Medical officials confirmed on Friday that the 70-year-old political leader is in a serious condition and is currently receiving intensive treatment.
The announcement was made by DF Star Hospital in Brazil’s capital, which stated that Bolsonaro was transferred from prison to the medical facility after experiencing severe symptoms including high fever, chills, sweating, vomiting, and low oxygen levels. According to his doctors, medical examinations later confirmed that he is suffering from bronchopneumonia, a form of pneumonia that affects multiple areas of the lungs.
Cardiologist Brasil Caiado, one of Bolsonaro’s physicians, told reporters that pneumonia in elderly patients can be particularly dangerous. According to him, infections in people above the age of 70 often progress quickly and may lead to life-threatening complications if not treated aggressively.
“Pneumonia in patients over 70 is always serious because the infection can progress into septicemia,” Caiado explained. “When bacteria enter the bloodstream, the condition can become far more severe and difficult to control.”
Earlier in the day, Bolsonaro’s eldest son Flavio Bolsonaro shared an update on Social Media platform X, revealing that his father had been transferred from prison to the hospital after experiencing chills and vomiting. The senator asked supporters to pray for his father’s recovery.
“I ask everyone to pray that this is nothing serious,” Flavio wrote, expressing concern about his father’s health condition.
The health crisis comes at a politically sensitive moment in Brazil. According to recent opinion polls, Flavio Bolsonaro and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are nearly tied in political support ahead of potential future Elections. Despite his legal troubles, Jair Bolsonaro has previously signaled interest in returning to Politics.
However, Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after a panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court justices convicted him last year for attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. The court concluded that he had participated in a plot aimed at destabilizing Brazil’s democratic institutions.
Hospital officials reported that Bolsonaro was admitted after doctors detected symptoms including high fever, breathing difficulties, sweating, and chills. Tests confirmed aspiration-related bronchopneumonia, a condition that can occur when food, liquid, or vomit enters the lungs.
According to the hospital’s official statement, Bolsonaro is currently receiving treatment in the ICU with intravenous antibiotics and supportive medical care.
“He is currently hospitalised in the intensive care unit and receiving IV antibiotics along with non-invasive clinical support,” the hospital confirmed.
Doctors also indicated that the former president may remain hospitalized for several days because the medications being administered require continuous monitoring and intravenous delivery.
Cardiologist Brasil Caiado said that because the treatment involves strong intravenous antibiotics, it is unlikely that Bolsonaro will return to prison immediately.
The former president has faced several health challenges in recent years. In January, prison authorities moved him to a larger cell after repeated concerns raised by his family regarding his health and living conditions.
His relatives have repeatedly petitioned Brazil’s Supreme Court to allow him to serve his sentence under house arrest, arguing that he requires better medical care and monitoring. However, the court has so far rejected those requests.
Bolsonaro’s son Carlos Bolsonaro also reacted strongly to the situation on social media, accusing Brazil’s political system of targeting his father. In a post on X, he claimed that “the system is literally and insistently trying to kill” the former president.
Despite the family’s appeals, Brazil’s Supreme Court has maintained its decision that Bolsonaro must continue serving his sentence in prison.
Health concerns surrounding Bolsonaro date back several years. In 2018, during his presidential campaign, he was stabbed during a rally, suffering serious abdominal injuries that required multiple surgeries. Since then, he has been hospitalized several times due to complications related to that attack.
More recently, in January, Bolsonaro reportedly fell from his bed inside the prison facility and was transported under police supervision to the same hospital in Brasília for neurological examinations.
Bolsonaro’s legal troubles stem from events that followed the 2022 Brazilian presidential election. After losing the election to President Lula, investigators accused Bolsonaro and several allies of attempting to undermine Brazil’s democratic system.
In September, a Brazilian court ruled that Bolsonaro and a number of his supporters were involved in plans aimed at overturning the election results. Prosecutors claimed the alleged scheme included plans to destabilize the government and encourage an uprising in early 2023.
Investigators also alleged that the plot included discussions about potential assassination attempts targeting prominent political figures. According to court documents, potential targets included Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and President Lula.
Authorities further stated that the alleged conspiracy involved encouraging supporters to stage protests and potentially spark an insurrection to challenge the election outcome.
Bolsonaro was ultimately convicted on multiple charges, including attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law and leading what prosecutors described as an armed criminal organization aimed at destabilizing the Brazilian government.
Despite the convictions, Bolsonaro has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that the accusations against him are politically motivated.
As of now, doctors continue to monitor his condition closely inside the ICU, while political observers in Brazil remain focused on both his health and the potential political implications surrounding the case.
