In a deeply emotional development, Savannah Guthrie, one of America’s most recognizable television journalists, has issued a public plea for the safe return of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who authorities believe was abducted from her residence in Tucson, Arizona. The 84-year-old woman was last seen on January 31, and investigators say she could not have left her home on her own.
Within hours of Guthrie’s tearful video appeal shared on Instagram, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he had instructed Federal Law enforcement agencies to step in and assist local authorities in the search operation. The case, now in its sixth day, is being treated as a suspected kidnapping by investigators.
Local and federal agencies continue to coordinate efforts as the investigation intensifies, amid growing concern over the elderly woman’s health and safety.
In the emotional video message, Savannah Guthrie appeared alongside her siblings, Annie and Cameron, directly addressing whoever may be holding their mother.
“We must be certain that you have her and that she is alive. We are prepared to listen, and we want to hear from you. Please, reach out to us,” Guthrie said, her voice trembling as she struggled to contain her emotions.
Speaking directly to her mother, Guthrie added, “Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. Everyone is trying to find you. Everywhere. We will not rest until we are together again.”
The NBC “Today” show co-host also highlighted the serious medical concerns surrounding her mother’s disappearance, noting that Nancy Guthrie relies on daily medication and suffers from chronic health issues.
“Our mother is both our home and our heart,” she said. “Her heart is frail, and so is her health. She lives in constant pain. She is without her medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer.”
Describing her mother’s personality, Guthrie painted a picture of a deeply loved and gentle woman. “Talk to our mom and you’ll see. She is full of kindness and wisdom. She is a devoted friend—funny, spunky, and clever. She has grandchildren who adore her, crowd around her, and cover her with kisses. She is a fiercely loving woman of goodness and light.”
Shortly after the video was released, President Trump publicly addressed the case, stating that he had spoken directly with Savannah Guthrie and assured the family of full federal support.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the nation was praying for the family and announced, “I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and local law enforcement’s, complete disposal—immediately.”
Earlier, speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump described the disappearance as a “very unusual situation” and confirmed that investigators were actively working to determine what had occurred. When asked whether additional federal resources would be deployed, he responded affirmatively.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, Nancy Guthrie had limited mobility and could not have left her home without assistance. Authorities are therefore treating the case as a kidnapping rather than a voluntary disappearance.
As of now, no suspect or person of interest has been officially identified. Sheriff Nanos confirmed that investigators are aware of reports suggesting possible ransom communications, though he declined to comment on their authenticity or whether they are being treated as credible leads.
The investigation remains active, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. For the Guthrie family, the message remains singular and urgent: bring Nancy home safely.
