One of the United States’ most critical military aircraft, commonly referred to as a “Doomsday plane,” was recently spotted flying low over California, raising speculation amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran.

The aircraft was observed performing flight maneuvers above the city of Fresno, according to local reports.

The sighting occurred at a time when the Middle East crisis has intensified following US and Israeli military strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks by Tehran.

Around the same time, the FBI reportedly issued an alert warning that Iran could attempt a surprise drone attack against targets on the US West Coast.

According to the alert, Iran was believed to be exploring the possibility of launching unmanned aerial vehicles from a vessel positioned off the US coastline.

“We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California,” the alert stated.

Military Aircraft Identified as E-6B Mercury

Officials later confirmed that the aircraft spotted over Fresno was a Boeing E-6B Mercury.

The plane is a specialized US Navy aircraft designed to function as an airborne command center during nuclear conflict or major national emergencies.

During the sighting, the aircraft reportedly conducted “touch-and-go” training exercises at Fresno Yosemite International Airport for nearly two hours.

These exercises involve landing briefly and immediately taking off again, allowing pilots to practice critical maneuvers without fully stopping at the airport.

Airport officials said such operations are not unusual at the facility.

“It is common for aircraft to conduct touch-and-go operations at Fresno Yosemite International Airport,” airport spokesperson Vikkie Calderon told local media.

She added that the airport’s long runway, location, and navigation systems make it suitable for a wide range of aviation training exercises.

What Is the US “Doomsday Plane”?

The E-6B Mercury plays a critical role in the United States’ nuclear command, control, and communications system.

Its mission is to maintain contact between US leadership and the country’s strategic nuclear forces during extreme situations such as nuclear war or catastrophic national emergencies.

Even if ground command centers were destroyed, the aircraft would still be capable of transmitting orders and coordinating military operations.

The plane serves as a communication bridge between top US decision-makers — including the president and secretary of defense — and the nation’s nuclear forces.

It is capable of communicating with all three components of the US nuclear triad:

  • Land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles
  • Submarine-launched ballistic missiles
  • Nuclear-armed strategic bombers

In extreme scenarios where traditional communication systems fail, the aircraft can also transmit launch commands to nuclear forces.

Major General Garrison previously described the aircraft’s capabilities in an interview, explaining that it can coordinate multiple elements of the US nuclear arsenal simultaneously.

“They can control the bombers if the bombers are on alert. They can control the missiles, because the missiles are always on alert. And obviously they can control our ballistic missile submarines,” he said.

Earlier Sighting in Los Angeles

The recent appearance of the E-6B Mercury comes just weeks after another highly specialized aircraft sparked speculation in California.

Earlier, a Boeing E-4B Nightwatch — another aircraft known as part of the US “Doomsday fleet” — landed at Los Angeles International Airport.

That aircraft serves as a mobile command center designed to protect US leadership during major national emergencies.

Reports indicated that the aircraft had transported US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to Southern California during his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour.

The tour aimed to showcase American military capabilities and strengthen support for defense initiatives.

Tensions Continue to Rise

The sighting of these specialized military aircraft has drawn attention as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.

While officials emphasize that the recent flights were part of routine training exercises, the timing has fueled speculation given the ongoing geopolitical crisis.

Security agencies continue to monitor potential threats, particularly as the conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States raises concerns about possible retaliation or broader regional escalation.
