A major fire broke out near Dubai International Airport early Monday after a drone strike reportedly hit a fuel tank close to the airport premises, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend flight operations as a precaution.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has already triggered a series of missile and drone attacks across the region.
Authorities in Dubai confirmed that emergency response teams were immediately deployed after the blaze erupted near one of the world’s busiest international aviation hubs.
Dubai’s Media Office said civil defence teams were working to contain the fire and that no injuries had been reported in the incident so far.
“One of the fuel tanks was impacted by a drone mishap near Dubai International Airport (DXB). Teams from Dubai Civil Defence are currently attempting to contain the fire. No injuries have been reported so far,” the Dubai Media Office said in an official statement.
Flight Operations Disrupted
The fire and resulting safety concerns led to the temporary suspension of flight operations at the airport, affecting both incoming and outgoing flights.
Air India announced that all of its flights to and from Dubai would be cancelled for the day due to the disruption caused by the incident.
In a statement, the airline said that both Air India and Air India Express flights operating to Dubai would remain suspended while the situation was being assessed.
However, the airline clarified that its special or ad hoc flight services to other cities in the United Arab Emirates would continue as scheduled.
These include flights to Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharjah, which were not directly affected by the disruption near Dubai International Airport.
| Location | Status of Flight Operations | Airline Response |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai International Airport | Operations temporarily suspended | Air India cancelled flights for the day |
| Abu Dhabi Airport | Operating normally | Ad hoc flights continuing |
| Ras Al Khaimah Airport | Operating normally | Flights unaffected |
| Sharjah Airport | Operating normally | Flights unaffected |
Videos of Massive Fire Circulate Online
Videos circulating widely on social media appeared to show large flames and thick smoke rising near the airport area, highlighting the scale of the fire.
However, the authenticity of several viral clips could not be independently verified at the time.
The visuals nevertheless raised concerns among residents and travelers, especially given the airport’s proximity to central areas of Dubai.
Air Defence Systems Activated in UAE
Hours after the incident near the airport, air defence alarms were triggered in several parts of the city as the United Arab Emirates responded to reported drone and missile threats.
The UAE Ministry of Defense confirmed that its air defence systems were actively intercepting incoming drones and missiles believed to have been launched from Iran.
“UAE air defenses are currently reacting to Iranian drone and missile threats,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the loud sounds heard across parts of the city were the result of defensive interceptions.
Rising Tensions After Threats to UAE Ports
The attack occurred just a day after Iran warned of potential strikes targeting key ports in the United Arab Emirates.
Tehran accused the United States of using port facilities in the UAE to launch recent military operations against Iran’s Kharg Island, which hosts the country’s primary oil export infrastructure.
Iran specifically referenced major ports including Fujairah Port, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, and Jebel Ali Port in Dubai in its warning.
Middle East Conflict Continues to Expand
The wider conflict intensified after the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28.
According to reports, the strikes caused heavy damage to Iran’s administrative and strategic infrastructure and resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Since then, Iran has launched a series of retaliatory attacks targeting US military installations, diplomatic missions, and strategic infrastructure across the Middle East.
More than 2,000 missile and drone attacks have reportedly taken place across the region, targeting locations such as oil facilities, ports, airports, hotels, and residential and commercial buildings.
Dubai International Airport has also faced earlier attacks during the conflict. On March 7, drones were reported near the airport, prompting security alerts and temporary disruptions.
Earlier on March 1, a night-time Iranian strike reportedly caused damage near the airport area and the Burj Al Arab hotel. Authorities said four people were injured in that earlier incident.
With attacks now spreading across multiple Gulf cities, security agencies across the region remain on high alert amid fears that the conflict could escalate further and impact critical infrastructure and global travel routes.
