A new Visa restriction policy targeting some Central American nationals who are alleged to be “acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and undermining the rule of law” was revealed by the US on Thursday.
According to a September 4 official notification from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the visa restriction policy will enable Washington to limit US visas for “Central American nationals who, while in Central American countries and intentionally acting on behalf of the CCP, knowingly direct, authorize, fund, provide significant support to, or carry out activities that undermine the rule of law in Central America.”
Under this new policy, the United States is taking action to restrict visas for a number of Central American citizens who have previously participated in similar operations. These people and their close relatives will therefore typically not be allowed to enter the United States. We are still advocating for accountability for Central American citizens who purposefully collaborate with the CCP in their region and cause instability in our hemisphere. Rubio went on.
According to the notification, the measures are being conducted in accordance with Immigration and Nationality Act Section 212(a)(3)(C).
Rubio did not, however, identify any specific people or provide concrete instances of the behaviors that they were being criticized for.
China-US relations
Trade tariffs, cybersecurity, intellectual property, surveillance, the origins of COVID-19, TikTok ownership, and the circumstances in Hong Kong and Taiwan are just a few of the problems that have caused tensions between the US and China for years.
Beijing has sought to strengthen its position in Latin America, which has historically been a part of the US sphere of influence, in recent years.
A request for reaction on Rubio’s remarks was not immediately answered by the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
