Final Steps of a Gaza Peace Agreement: Trump Prepares for White House Meeting with Netanyahu

According to Axios, former US President Donald Trump confirmed that negotiations for a Gaza peace agreement were in their “final stages.” The proposed deal, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, reportedly has the support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas, and several Arab nations. On Monday, Trump and Netanyahu are scheduled to meet at the White House to move the process forward.

The announcement came just hours after Trump hinted at “something special” in the Middle East through a Truth Social post on Saturday. “In the Middle East, we have a genuine opportunity to succeed. For the first time, everyone is aligned for something unique. We’ll finish it,” he wrote.

Speaking with Axios, Trump added, “Everyone has come together to make a deal, but we still need to finalize it. It has been an honor working with the Arab nations. They are engaging with Hamas. Peace is what Israel, the Arab world, and Bibi all want.” Netanyahu, often referred to as Bibi, has also signaled his willingness to cooperate.

Trump Calls the Gaza Deal a ‘Great Day for Peace’

Reiterating his optimism, Trump stated that the Gaza agreement would be “the first chance for real peace in the Middle East” and “a historic day for Israel and the region” if successful. His meeting with Netanyahu follows recent discussions in New York, where the Israeli leader met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Just last week, the United States presented a 21-point Middle East peace proposal before the UN General Assembly. The framework calls for renewed talks between Israel and the Palestinians for “peaceful coexistence,” the release of all hostages (both alive and deceased), and an end to Israeli military aggression on Qatar.

Arab Nations and Hamas Involvement

In an interview with Reuters on Sunday, Trump revealed that the response has been “very positive because Bibi also wants the deal.” He praised the involvement of leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, and Jordan, acknowledging their roles in advancing negotiations. “Everyone wants an agreement. Everyone is participating. Hamas wants it too—partly because everyone is exhausted by this conflict,” Trump added.

He further explained that “the details still need to be worked out. If Hamas leaders, for example, are escorted out of the country, and if they end the war and release all hostages, then yes, we allow them to leave.”

However, in a statement on Sunday, Hamas denied receiving any new proposals from Egyptian and Qatari mediators. “Hamas reaffirms its readiness to study any proposals it receives from the mediators with full positivity and responsibility, in a manner that preserves the national rights of our people,” the group said, according to Axios.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has had devastating consequences. Since October 2023, Israel’s assault has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, displaced the entire population of the besieged territory, and triggered a severe famine crisis. International observers describe the situation as one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history.

Negotiations for a Gaza peace agreement are taking place under this grim backdrop. The repeated reports emphasize that the war has led to widespread starvation, complete displacement of Gaza’s population, and the loss of tens of thousands of lives. As the conflict continues, the urgency for a diplomatic breakthrough has never been greater.

A peace deal for Gaza at this stage represents more than just political reconciliation—it carries the hope of ending mass suffering, restoring stability to the Middle East, and creating a framework for lasting peace after decades of hostility.
