Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has once again found herself at the centre of controversy following the release of a new batch of documents that reveal previously unseen email exchanges with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The emails, described as unusually personal and at times flippant, have reignited public debate about the nature of their relationship and the royal’s past judgment.

The correspondence shows Epstein making provocative remarks, including claiming that he was “wife hunting,” while the Crown Princess responded in a tone that critics have described as overly familiar. In one exchange, Epstein suggested that he hoped he had not made her sad, to which Mette-Marit replied, “You tickle my brain.”

The revelations have shocked many, given that Mette-Marit is married to Crown Prince Haakon, the heir apparent to the Norwegian throne. The 52-year-old royal has since issued a public apology through the Norwegian royal palace, expressing regret over her association with Epstein.

“I showed poor judgment and I deeply regret having had any contact with Epstein. It is simply embarrassing,” the Crown Princess said in an official statement.

She further added, “Jeffrey Epstein is responsible for his acts. I must take responsibility for not checking Epstein’s background better and for not understanding quickly enough what kind of person he was.”

According to the newly released files, the email exchanges took place in 2012 — more than a decade after Mette-Marit married Crown Prince Haakon. The messages reflect a casual and at times playful tone that has since drawn widespread criticism.

In one email, Epstein wrote, “How is the weather? I’m looking for a wife. Paris is proving interesting but I prefer Scandinavians.” Responding with surprise, the Crown Princess wrote, “Am still trying to get over the shock that you are in fact wife hunting.”

In another exchange, Epstein mentioned, “Two Norwegians here, 24 and 25… I like Oslo.” Mette-Marit replied sharply, “My God! You must be drunk spelling mistake. The girls are 24 & 25? I like Oslo too. Call me tmr (tomorrow).”

Additional emails reveal Epstein sharing a science-related article with the Crown Princess, joking that he hoped it would not upset her because she liked to “live in the land of make-believe.” Mette-Marit responded warmly, writing, “You always make me grin. Because you tickle my brain.”

Mette-Marit had previously acknowledged in 2019 that she was acquainted with Epstein between 2011 and 2013, a period during which his criminal background had not yet been fully exposed to the public. However, the newly surfaced emails have intensified scrutiny over the nature of their interactions.

The disclosure has once again raised uncomfortable questions for the Norwegian monarchy, with critics arguing that the exchanges reflect a lack of judgment unbecoming of a senior royal figure. Supporters, however, point to the Crown Princess’s apology and acceptance of responsibility as a necessary step toward accountability.

As more documents related to Epstein continue to emerge globally, the fallout from his extensive network of contacts is likely to persist, drawing renewed attention to individuals who once crossed paths with him — including figures at the highest levels of public life.
