Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday that King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, will make a state visit to the Holy See next month. The trip had to be canceled in April due to the deteriorating health of the late Pope Francis.
The British royals were due to visit the Vatican as part of a wider tour of Italy but it was postponed on medical advice after Francis was told to rest.
One of the last dignitaries to see the late pope before his death a few weeks later, they were able to arrange a private audience with him.
They will join Pope Leo XIV to commemorate the 2025 Catholic Holy Year as part of the rescheduled visit, according to Buckingham Palace.
The British media had earlier reported that the tour would involve a visit to the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, but the statement also stated that it would honor the ecumenical work of the Catholic Church and the Church of england.
Charles has met Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. As the king of Britain, he is the supreme ruler of the Church of England, which broke away from Rome in 1534.
