Fresh political tension has gripped Pakistan after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) alleged that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is being secretly transferred from prison to a hospital without informing his family. The party has termed the reported move a “blatant violation of fundamental rights” and warned that it could put the 73-year-old leader’s life at risk.
According to PTI, reports and circulating information suggest that authorities may shift Khan for medical treatment without transparency. The party claims that neither his immediate family nor his personal medical team has been officially notified.
In a strongly worded statement, PTI said any medical examination, transfer, or treatment must be conducted in the presence of Khan’s personal physicians and at least one family member, in line with prison regulations and legal norms.
Concerns Over Reported Vision Loss and Health Deterioration
The controversy intensified following reports that Imran Khan has allegedly lost more than 85% of vision in his right eye while in custody. Though these claims have not been independently verified by authorities, PTI leaders argue that the situation demands immediate and transparent medical intervention.
Khan’s family and legal team have previously accused jail authorities of failing to provide adequate medical care. They maintain that the former prime minister is suffering from multiple health complications, including severe vision impairment.
“Reports and rumors indicating a plot to covertly transfer our leader Imran Khan to a hospital without informing his family have deeply alarmed US,” PTI said. “Such actions violate established legal standards and basic Human Rights.”
The party emphasized that under Pakistani jail regulations, officials are obligated to inform family members and designated physicians before any medical procedure or transfer involving a prisoner.
Protests Outside Parliament, Demand for Immediate Treatment
In response to the alleged secrecy and delays in medical care, members of Pakistan’s opposition alliance staged a sit-in outside Parliament House, demanding urgent medical attention for Khan.
The PTI-affiliated Tehreek Tahafuz-i-Ayeen Pakistan (TTAP) also launched a protest demonstration, vowing to continue agitation until Khan is transferred to Islamabad’s Al-Shifa Hospital for comprehensive treatment.
PTI described the delay in providing proper medical care as “extremely unfortunate and inhumane,” asserting that “no compromise whatsoever will be made regarding the health and wellbeing of our leader.”
Supreme Court Steps In
Amid mounting controversy, the Supreme Court of Pakistan reportedly directed authorities to constitute a medical board to assess Khan’s eye condition. The directive came after concerns about significant vision loss gained public attention.
The court’s involvement has added legal weight to the issue, placing pressure on prison authorities to ensure medical transparency and compliance with due process.
Background: Imran Khan’s Incarceration
Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023, following his arrest at his Lahore residence after conviction in a corruption case. He is currently lodged in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Since his imprisonment, PTI has repeatedly alleged political victimization and inadequate treatment of its leader. The government, on the other hand, maintains that due legal procedures are being followed.
As speculation grows over Khan’s health and possible hospital transfer, the situation has once again intensified Pakistan’s already volatile political climate. Whether authorities provide greater clarity on his medical condition in the coming days could prove crucial in calming tensions.
