Journalist Claims Israeli Airstrike in Lebanon Was Deliberate Attempt to Silence Coverage

A journalist has accused Israel of deliberately targeting him in a missile strike in southern Lebanon, claiming the attack was intended to silence media coverage of the ongoing Conflict. The incident occurred near the strategically significant Al-Qasmiya Bridge, intensifying concerns over press safety in war zones.

Steve Sweeney, a correspondent working with Russian television network RT, said he was injured when an Israeli missile struck just meters away from where he and his cameraman, Ali Rida, were filming on Thursday.

“A Targeted Attempt to Kill Me,” Says Journalist

In a post shared on Social Media, Sweeney alleged that the strike was not accidental but a deliberate attempt to eliminate him while reporting. He claimed that there were no prior warnings issued before the attack, either to civilians or to the Lebanese Army, which had permitted the media crew to operate in the area.

According to Sweeney, the strike took place while he was documenting alleged attacks on civilian infrastructure, including bridges, and reporting on large-scale displacement in the region.

He further alleged that the attack was meant to intimidate journalists and prevent them from documenting what he described as “war crimes.”

Attack Captured on Camera

The incident was partially captured on video. Footage shows a sudden explosion near the filming location, followed by thick smoke engulfing the area as Sweeney rushed for cover. The blast reportedly occurred only a few meters from the crew’s position.

Following the strike, both Sweeney and cameraman Ali Rida were taken to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel treated Sweeney’s injuries, including removing shrapnel from his arm, according to reports and visuals shared online.

Strategic Importance of Al-Qasmiya Bridge

The Al-Qasmiya Bridge spans the Litani River and serves as a critical link connecting southern Lebanon to other parts of the country. In recent days, the area has witnessed intensified Israeli Airstrikes targeting key infrastructure.

The Israeli military has stated that such crossings are being used by Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, to transport fighters and weapons. As a result, bridges and transport routes have become focal points in ongoing military operations.

Russia Condemns the Strike

The incident drew strong criticism from Russia, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stating that the strike could not be dismissed as accidental. She pointed out that the missile did not hit a major military target but instead struck near a location where journalists were actively reporting.

Zakharova also highlighted broader concerns about journalist safety in conflict zones, referencing previous casualties among media personnel in the region and calling for an international response.

Israel’s Response

Israeli authorities have rejected allegations of deliberate targeting. According to official statements, the strike was conducted after issuing warnings to civilians to evacuate the area.

Israel maintains that its operations are aimed at neutralizing militant infrastructure and has emphasized that precautions are taken to minimize civilian harm, including advance notices before strikes.
