According to three senior administration officials who spoke to CNN, the administration is thinking of making a transcript of the interview publicly available, and the Justice Department possesses an audio recording of the interview it had with Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell last month.
The recording’s existence has never been made public before, and it coincides with pressure on the Trump administration to be more open about the information it possesses about Epstein.
The three senior administration officials told CNN that they are presently debating whether to make the transcript of Maxwell’s conversation with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche public.
The recording has been digitized and transcribed by the administration. According to one official, parts of the transcript that would include private information, such as victim names, would also need to be blacked.
Discussions about perhaps publishing the audio and transcripts were still going on as of Tuesday morning.
One official stated, “A final decision has not been made.”
“In the White House, there has been some discussion about whether making the details of the interview public would revive the Epstein controversy at a time when many officials close to President Donald Trump think the story has largely died down,” another official told CNN.
Nonetheless, the officials have been keen to manage the narrative and optics around the matter, as many have been dissatisfied with the dissemination of information about the Epstein case.
According to two administration sources, the audio and transcript would probably be made public sooner rather than later. According to one, the release might take place in a few weeks, contingent on the decisions made by the highest ranking officials in the Justice Department and West Wing. Whether the White House and DOJ agreed on the matter was unclear at first.
CNN is merely making a valiant effort to turn outdated news into new content. In an interview with Newsmax, a legitimate news organization that consistently has higher ratings than CNN, [Trump] already addressed this issue, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told CNN.
The Justice Department has been contacted by CNN. Maxwell’s attorney chose not to comment.
Last month, Blanche spent two days interviewing Maxwell in the US attorney’s office in Tallahassee. For executing a multi-year plan with Epstein to seduce and sexually assault minors, Maxwell was given a 20-year sentence in federal prison in 2022. She has persisted in challenging her conviction, even before the Supreme Court.
Maxwell’s transfer from a federal prison in Florida to a lower-security federal prison camp in Texas last week was a rather unusual one because people convicted of sexual felonies are nearly usually considered to pose too much of a risk to public safety.
As Trump has faced mounting pressure from his base for transparency, the White House has repeatedly said the DOJ should release all “credible evidence” in the Epstein files.
Trump reiterated his desire to see all of the files made public when questioned about Blanche’s meeting with Maxwell last week.
Trump told Newsmax on Friday, “We would like to release everything, but we don’t want people to get hurt that shouldn’t be hurt, and I would assume that was why he was there.”
The president claimed that he had not discussed his discussions with Maxwell with Blanche and was unsure of when the details will be revealed.
Trump stated, “I haven’t talked about it, but he’s a very straight shooter and a very talented guy, Todd Blanche, and I think he probably wanted to know, you know, just to get a feeling of it.”
CNN earlier reported that a senior Trump administration official said that although the president has left the door open on Maxwell’s clemency on multiple occasions in recent weeks, stating that he is “allowed to do it,” he is not actively considering it.
This tale is still in progress and will be updated.
