Trump highlighted his close personal ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in spite of his criticism. “As you know, I get along very well with Modi.” He is excellent. Trump remarked, “He was here a couple of months ago.”

US President Donald Trump softened his words hours after asserting that the US had “lost” India to China, stating that friendships with New Delhi were still “special” and that he still had a close personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A few moments later, Prime Minister Modi tweeted that he “appreciates and fully reciprocates” Trump’s praise for India-US relations.

The US president said, “I don’t think we have,” in response to a question about who he blamed for “losing India” to China. The fact that India will be purchasing so much oil from Russia, as you are aware, has greatly saddened me. And I informed them about that. We put a very big tariff on India. 50% is an extremely high tariff.

Trump emphasized his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in spite of his criticism. “You are aware of how well I get along with Modi. He’s fantastic. “A few months ago, he was here,” Trump remarked.

Modi is referred to by Trump as a “great prime minister.”

The President also reaffirmed the “very special relationship” between India and the US, insisting that he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will “always be friends” despite occasional disagreements.

Trump said, “I always will,” in response to reporters’ questions about whether he was prepared to mend fences with India. PM Modi and I will always be buddies. He’s a great Prime Minister. Even though we will always be friends, I don’t like what he is doing right now. However, the relationship between the United States and India is extremely unique. There is no need for concern. We just have moments on occasion.”

Trump expressed optimism about trade negotiations with India and other countries, saying, “They are going great. Other nations are doing very well. We’re doing fantastically with them all.”

Trump’s flattering comments on India follow the release of a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Tianjin meeting with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

The US President hinted that ties between Washington and New Delhi had hit rock bottom, saying the United States had “lost” India and Russia to “the darkest China.” His remarks came days after the three leaders were seen together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

China’s Xi Jinping held the SCO Summit in Tianjin, which was attended by a number of world leaders, including Russian President Putin and Prime Minister Modi. The three leaders’ unity was hailed as “a turning point” and “a new world order” in the midst of the US President’s tariff war.

India, meanwhile, chose not to respond to US President Donald Trump’s assertion that New Delhi seemed to be siding with Beijing and Moscow.

Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the external affairs ministry, responded to a question regarding his remarks by saying, “I have no comments to offer on this post at this moment.”

The India-US bilateral ties have seen their lowest point in years following the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by Trump on New Delhi last month. Due to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, the US imposed 25% base tariffs and an additional 25% tax.
