Tokyo, Japan: Northern Japan was placed under a tsunami advisory on Sunday after a 6.2-magnitude Earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu Island. Authorities warned residents in Iwate Prefecture to stay away from coastal areas as waves up to one meter were expected to reach the shore.
According to Japan’s national broadcaster NHK, the Meteorological Agency issued the tsunami warning around 5:12 p.m. local time (1:42 p.m. IST), following seismic activity detected approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of Iwate. The agency cautioned that waves measuring nearly one meter (3 feet, 3 inches) could hit the Pacific coastline shortly after.
Despite the advisory, officials emphasized that there were no reported irregularities or safety issues at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, operated by Tohoku Electric Power Co. Routine checks confirmed all systems were operating normally.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also confirmed that the earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 6.26, occurred off the east coast of Honshu, Japan’s largest island and home to Iwate Prefecture. The system continues to monitor the region for potential aftershocks or secondary seismic events.
Japan, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, experiences frequent earthquakes and tsunami warnings due to its active tectonic zones. Authorities have once again urged citizens in coastal regions to remain alert, follow evacuation advisories, and prioritize safety until further notice.
