One Person in Critical Condition After Border Patrol Shooting in Southern Arizona

Authorities have confirmed that one person remains in critical condition following a shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent in southern Pima County, Arizona, early Tuesday morning. The incident has triggered a coordinated investigation involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, reflecting the seriousness of the case and the growing scrutiny surrounding Immigration Enforcement actions in the United States.

According to official statements, the shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road, a remote stretch located about 10 miles north of the U.S.–Mexico border and southwest of Tucson. The region is routinely patrolled by Border Patrol agents due to its history of migrant crossings and suspected smuggling activity.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has requested to lead the use-of-force investigation, a standard procedure in incidents involving federal officers. The inquiry is being conducted with support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), ensuring oversight and accountability as investigators work to establish the sequence of events that led to the shooting.

Officials have described the person’s condition as critical, though stable, and have not released the individual’s identity.

Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that the FBI’s Phoenix–Tucson office is actively overseeing the investigation, which remains ongoing. At this stage, authorities have not confirmed whether any Border Patrol agents or additional law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
