According to a report by news agency Reuters, the US Department of Justice on Tuesday made public an image of a handwritten note purportedly written by Jeffrey Epstein and addressed to Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University team doctor who is currently serving a life sentence for sexually abusing minors.
The disclosure came as part of a massive release of more than 30,000 pages of documents related to the Epstein investigation. While the letter has drawn widespread attention due to its inflammatory language, officials stressed that none of the released records accuse former President Donald Trump of committing any crime.
Larry Nassar, a former American osteopathic physician, was convicted of sexually assaulting hundreds of young female athletes over a period of more than two decades. Using his position as a trusted medical professional, Nassar carried out abuse under the guise of medical treatment, leading to one of the most notorious sexual abuse scandals in US sports history.
The handwritten note attributed to Epstein contains a deeply offensive line that reads: “Our president also shares our love of young, nubile girls.” The message is accompanied by a drawing depicting two figures holding hands across a table, further fueling speculation and outrage.
Despite the provocative nature of the language, Reuters reported that none of the Justice Department’s disclosures include allegations that Donald Trump violated any laws. The department also emphasized that the authenticity of the letter could not be independently verified.
Several inconsistencies surrounding the letter have raised red flags. Notably, the envelope containing the note was postmarked in Virginia just three days after Epstein’s death in August 2019, even though Epstein had been incarcerated in New York at the time. Additionally, the return address listed Epstein’s jail facility but omitted his inmate number, a mandatory requirement for outgoing prison mail.
After Epstein was officially ruled to have died by suicide, the letter was returned as undeliverable to the federal detention center in New York, where it was subsequently received by government authorities.
Documents released alongside the letter reveal that the FBI had requested a handwriting analysis to determine whether Epstein actually wrote the note. However, the results of that examination have not been made public, leaving questions about the document’s origin unresolved.
In a statement posted on X, the Justice Department said, “Some of these documents contain false and sensationalist claims made against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election. To be clear, the assertions are untrue and unjustified.” The statement did not specify which documents were being referenced.
Reuters noted that one of Larry Nassar’s former attorneys declined to comment on the matter, while another did not immediately respond to requests for clarification. The Justice Department disclosures do not allege any criminal conduct by Trump in connection with Epstein or Nassar.
In a 2023 report, the Associated Press revealed that a letter addressed to Nassar was discovered in the mailroom of a New York federal jail following Epstein’s death. However, it remains unclear whether Epstein and Nassar ever had a direct personal relationship or correspondence prior to this alleged communication.
Nassar, who served as team doctor for Olympic gymnasts for nearly 18 years, is currently serving a 60-year federal prison sentence for possessing child sexual abuse material. In addition, he received multiple state-level sentences in Michigan totaling up to 300 years for sexually abusing athletes under his care.
The release of the disputed letter has reignited public scrutiny around the Epstein case, highlighting ongoing concerns over misinformation, document authenticity, and the broader implications of unverified claims surfacing years after key events.
