Russian President Vladimir putin strongly criticized US attempts to pressure china and India into reducing energy cooperation with Moscow, asserting that such actions would harm the global economy and ultimately backfire on Washington. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Group in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin stated, “India will never allow itself to be humiliated,” and emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not submit to outside pressure.
According to Putin, efforts to impose higher tariffs or restrictions on Russian energy exports would increase global energy prices, forcing the US Federal Reserve to maintain high interest rates and slowing down the American economy. He described such measures as economically counterproductive and warned that they would have unintended consequences for Washington.
Putin Supports India’s Energy Policy
Putin specifically highlighted India’s energy strategy, noting that New Delhi has no reason to yield to external pressures. He reiterated that Prime Minister Modi would never bow to such demands, stating, “India will never allow itself to be humiliated.” Putin also quantified the potential economic impact, explaining that India could face losses between $9 billion and $10 billion if it halted purchases of Russian energy.
“Believe me, the citizens of a nation like India will monitor political decisions carefully and will never tolerate public humiliation,” Putin added. “I know Prime Minister Modi personally, and he would never agree to such measures.” He emphasized that any attempt to coerce India into stopping its purchases of Russian oil would be pointless and ultimately rejected by the Indian population.
US Hypocrisy Highlighted by Putin
The Russian leader accused the United States of hypocrisy, pointing out that while Washington pressures India over Russian energy imports, it still depends on Russia for critical resources. Putin highlighted that the US, one of the largest users of nuclear power globally, relies heavily on imported uranium. “Russia is the second-largest supplier of uranium to the US market, yet we are not the largest provider,” he stated, underlining the contradictions in American policy.
Putin also stressed the importance of addressing Russia-India bilateral trade payment issues that persist despite Western sanctions. He suggested that solutions could be found either through alternative financial channels or within the framework of BRICS cooperation. “We must find a solution,” he said, implying that resolving these payment concerns would further strengthen economic ties between Russia and India.
In conclusion, Putin reiterated that attempts by external forces to influence India’s energy decisions are not only economically futile but politically untenable, reinforcing the strategic partnership between Moscow and New Delhi in the energy sector.
