Reopening the Strait of Hormuz Not Trump’s Top Priority Amid Push to End Iran War Early

According to senior officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, five weeks into the conflict with Iran, Donald Trump has indicated to aides that he is prepared to end Operation Epic Fury even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.

Officials warned that any attempt to reopen the strategically critical waterway would be highly complex and could extend the US military campaign beyond Trump’s targeted four- to six-week timeline.

If the US chooses not to act immediately, it could effectively leave Iran with significant control over the strait. The ongoing disruption has already driven up Global energy prices by restricting oil flows through one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

While reopening the strait is not currently a top priority, officials noted that the option remains under consideration for a later stage.

At the same time, the US has increased its military presence in the region. The USS Tripoli and approximately 2,500 Marines were deployed over the weekend. Reports also suggest that Trump is weighing a complex mission to secure Iran’s uranium stockpiles, along with the possible deployment of an additional 10,000 ground troops.

Focus on “Core Objectives”

Sources indicate that Trump and his advisers recently concluded that forcing open the chokepoint would significantly prolong the conflict. Instead, the administration is prioritizing its core objectives: weakening Iran’s naval capabilities and missile systems.

The strategy aims to degrade Iran’s military strength and then end hostilities, while using diplomatic pressure to compel Tehran to restore normal trade through the strait.

If diplomatic efforts fail, US officials say Washington may encourage allies in the Gulf and Europe to take the lead in reopening the passage.

The shift in priorities was reflected during a White House briefing on Tuesday. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that ensuring safe passage for oil tankers is not one of Trump’s primary goals in concluding the conflict.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Al Jazeera that the strait would eventually reopen.

“It will be open one way or another—either because Iran abides by international law, or because a coalition of nations ensures it,” Rubio said.

Despite suffering heavy losses—including damage to parts of its navy and continued US Airstrikes—Iran has continued to threaten commercial shipping in the strait. However, it has allowed limited passage for certain allied nations, including India.

The disruption has significantly reduced oil flows and contributed to rising global crude prices.

Trump’s stance on the issue has shifted throughout the conflict. Earlier this week, he warned of strikes on Iran’s power infrastructure and oil facilities if the strait was not reopened quickly. At other times, he has downplayed its importance, suggesting that responsibility for keeping the route open should fall to other nations.
