Following a week-long suspension, late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel returned to television to thunderous acclaim. In a rambling monologue filled with sarcasm and puns, Kimmel discussed the shootings of Trump adviser Charlie Kirk and Trump himself.
Emotionally charged, a tearful Kimmel said that Trump “tried his best” to cancel him and insisted that he wasn’t making jokes about Kirk’s murder, which caused his show to become embroiled in controversy.
However, the ABC star was greeted with a hero’s welcome and received several minutes of ovation before he began his 20-minute monologue. “It was ear damaging to be honest,” an attendee, Kevin Winhard, told CNN.
KIRK KILLING, CONTROVERSY KIMMEL ON
The shooting of Kirk, a right-wing activist, was the topic that Kimmel, a scathing Trump critic, went straight to in his opening remarks.
“I have no illusions about changing anyone’s mind, but I do want to make something clear, because it’s important to me as a human and that is, you understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel stated.
Kimmel went on to say, “Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what… was obviously a deeply disturbed individual,” as his voice broke.
As he commended Kirk’s wife, Erica, for openly forgiving her husband’s killer, the presenter of the late-night program, who has a huge global fan base, broke down. Kimmel responded, “I hope it can be that,” with tears in her eyes.
Kirk, who helped Trump build support among young voters ahead of the presidential election, was shot dead while he was addressing a gathering at Utah Valley University.
On his show, Kimmel claimed that Trump supporters were “doing everything they can” to capitalize on the tragedy, which infuriated several conservatives. Furthermore, he claimed that Kirk’s murderer may have been a MAGA Republican.
Last week, ABC suspended Kimmel’s show “indefinitely” after Republicans erupted. However, following criticism from media hosts, Hollywood celebrities, and even Republicans like Ted Cruz, it was compelled to permit “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to restart production.
When Kimmel returned, he was unreserved in his criticism of the ABC affiliates who had pulled his show from the air. “That is against the law. It’s not American. “It isn’t American,” he declared.
KIMMEL BLATHERS TRUMP
A significant part of his monologue was reserved for roasting Trump, who called ABC a “true bunch of losers” for letting Kimmel resume his show. “Let Kimmel rot in his bad ratings,” Trump sneered in a scathing post.
In a brutal takedown, Kimmel underscored that Trump “celebrates” Americans losing their livelihoods because “he can’t take a joke”.
“He tried his best to cancel me, and instead he forced millions of people to watch this show,” Kimmel said.
“The President of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs… A government threat to silence a comedian the President doesn’t like is anti-American,” he said before signing off.
