A tragic explosion ripped through a high-end bar in Switzerland on New Year’s Eve, killing at least 40 people and injuring more than 100 others, according to Swiss authorities cited by the Italian Foreign Ministry. While initial reports referred to “tens” of fatalities, officials later confirmed that the death toll had climbed significantly as rescue operations continued.
The incident occurred at the Le Constellation Bar and Lounge, a popular upscale venue in the alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana, where hundreds of people had gathered to welcome the New Year. At the time of the explosion, more than 150 patrons were inside the establishment.
Explosion Originated in Basement Area
According to police officials, the blast originated in the basement of the bar. Swiss authorities are currently treating the incident as a fire-related explosion rather than an act of terrorism. Investigators emphasized that there is no evidence at this stage suggesting an intentional attack.
Although the exact cause remains unknown, local Swiss media have speculated that the explosion may have been triggered by fireworks used during a concert inside the venue. Police, however, have not confirmed these reports.
“There has been an unidentified explosion, and there are multiple fatalities and injuries,” police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion told AFP, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the cause.
Hospitals Overwhelmed, Emergency Measures Imposed
Medical facilities in and around Crans-Montana were quickly overwhelmed by the influx of victims, many of whom suffered severe burn injuries. Doctors on the ground described the situation as chaotic, with emergency teams working around the clock to stabilize patients.
Authorities have established a helpline for families seeking information about missing or injured relatives. In addition, a temporary no-fly zone has been imposed over Crans-Montana to allow uninterrupted emergency and investigative operations.
Videos circulating on social media show thick plumes of smoke rising from the damaged bar shortly after the blast, highlighting the scale of the destruction.
Investigation Underway, No Terror Link Found
The prosecutor-general of Switzerland’s Valais canton, Beatrice Pilloud, confirmed that an official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of what she described as a “dramatic situation.” Speaking to the BBC, Pilloud stressed that authorities are proceeding under the assumption that the incident was caused by a fire.
“At this stage, there is no indication that this was an attack,” Pilloud said, adding that further details could not be disclosed out of respect for the victims’ families.
Efforts are currently underway to identify the victims and ensure their remains are returned to relatives as quickly as possible. Officials noted that the process involves extensive forensic work, requiring the temporary closure of parts of the district.
Tourist Hub Shaken by Tragedy
Located in the scenic Swiss Alps, Crans-Montana is a renowned international tourist destination, attracting visitors year-round for skiing, snowboarding, and golf. The resort lies approximately two hours from Bern, Switzerland’s capital, and is known for hosting high-profile events and affluent travelers.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Switzerland’s tourism sector, particularly as it occurred during one of the busiest periods of the winter season.
Fire Risks Heightened Amid Drought Conditions
The explosion comes at a time when Switzerland has been grappling with extraordinary drought conditions and an increased risk of fires. Authorities have warned that prolonged dry weather has made buildings and forested areas more vulnerable.
In recent years, wildfires have posed a growing threat across the country. Data shows that Switzerland lost more than 3% of its forest cover between 2001 and 2024 due to fires, particularly during hot and dry seasons.
The incident also follows a major fire earlier this year at Geneva’s historic Four Seasons Hotel Des Bergues, one of the oldest luxury hotels in Switzerland, where several people were injured.
As investigations continue, the nation mourns one of the deadliest New Year’s Eve disasters in its recent history.
