According to Reuters, Israel’s proposal to suspend its military activities in some areas of Gaza for ten hours each day is insufficient to address the pressing demands of the conflict’s civilian victims, according to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
Lammy advocated for quicker relief distribution and a more comprehensive political solution in a statement released on Sunday, calling the announcement “essential but long overdue.”
According to Reuters, Lammy stated that “this announcement alone cannot alleviate the needs of those desperately suffering in Gaza.” “We need a ceasefire that can put an end to the conflict, free hostages, and allow aid to enter Gaza without any obstacles.”
Israel claimed that more humanitarian aid could enter through designated corridors as a result of the daily pauses. However, humanitarian organizations report that the situation on the ground is still dire, with a shortage of food, water, and medical supplies.
According to statistics, since the battle started in October of last year, when Hamas launched a murderous offensive on Israel, more than 38,000 Palestinians have died. In the Gaza Strip, the conflict has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
Numerous people in Gaza are in danger of famine, according to warnings from the UN and other international organizations. Despite repeated appeals for Israel to fully open land borders and guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers, access to aid is still restricted.
According to Lammy, the UK will keep advocating for greater access and backing initiatives for a sustainable ceasefire.
