The United States President Donald Trump stated before the United Nations General Assembly that London “wants to go to sharia law” under its “terrible mayor.” A representative for Mayor Sadiq Khan retaliated, describing the comments as “appalling and bigoted”.
During his speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump rekindled his conflict with London Mayor Sadiq Khan by asserting that the British city wanted to “go to sharia law.”
In certain nations with a majority of Muslims, sharia law—Islamic law based on the Quran and Hadith—regulates both private and public spheres.
During his UN address, Trump remarked, “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor — terrible, terrible mayor — and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed.” They now wish to adopt sharia law. You can’t do that, though, because you are in another country. Trump also lashed out at immigration and climate policies in Europe, saying, “Both the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of western Europe if something isn’t done immediately. This cannot continue.
He accused the UN of “funding an assault on Western countries and their borders” and warned, “Europe is in serious trouble. A force of illegal aliens has invaded them like no one has ever seen before.
Meanwhile, Khan’s spokesperson dismissed Trump’s remarks, calling them “appalling and bigoted”, according to the Independent. “We’re thrilled to welcome the record number of US citizens moving here, as London is the greatest city in the world and safer than major US cities,” the statement continued.
In a social media post, Labour MP Wes Streeting backed the London Mayor, saying, “Sadiq Khan is not trying to impose sharia law on London.” This mayor marches with pride, defends people of different backgrounds and viewpoints, and is committed to enhancing our streets, transportation, air quality, safety, opportunities, and choices.
According to the Independent, the Muslim Council of Britain went one step further and said it prayed for Trump’s “health and wellbeing as his hallucinations seem to be getting worse by the day.”
A PROLONG FEUD
Trump’s comments on Tuesday are the most recent in a string of personal jabs directed at Khan. During his recent state visit to the UK, Trump said he personally requested that Khan not be invited to a royal banquet at Windsor Castle hosted in his honour. I didn’t want him there, to be honest. Trump told reporters, “I requested that he not be present.”
Regarding immigration, crime, and public safety, he said Khan was “among the worst mayors in the world” and was performing a “terrible job.” Trump also complained about London’s rise in knife crime and what he described as “the dirt, the filth”.
For years, Khan and Trump have been at odds, with Khan often denouncing Trump’s divisive speech and immigration policies while Trump has retaliated with more personal jabs.
Over the years, Khan has regularly criticized Trump’s divisive speech and immigration policies, while Trump has retaliated with more personal jabs.
